The scroll of light generates a permanent field of light when read. The field has a 9-unit radius if blessed or a 5-unit radius if uncursed. If cursed, it instead creates a 5-unit radius field of darkness and extinguishes active light sources. If confused, the scroll will instead produce yellow light (unless it is cursed) or black light (if it is cursed).  (For the 3.4.3 version, if confused, the scroll will instead produce a field of darkness regardless of the beatitude of the scroll - a 9-unit radius if the scroll was blessed, or a 5-unit radius if the scroll was uncursed or cursed. In addition, all carried light sources will be extinguished.) Sunsword is not extinguished by the extinguishing effects, nor is the light generated by light producing creatures such as yellow lights.

When read, the scroll of light either generates a permanent field of light or darkness (80% chance) or generates one monster (20% chance). The field is a 9-unit radius of field of light if blessed, a 5-unit radius field of light if uncursed, or a 5-unit radius field of darkness if cursed. The moster is yellow light if not cursed, or black light if cursed.

If confused, it always generates yellow or black light.

Up to the version 3.4.3, the scroll never generated a monster. If confused, it would produce a field of darkness regardless of the beatitude of the scroll - a 9-unit radius if the scroll was blessed, or a 5-unit radius if the scroll was uncursed or cursed.

Messages

A lit field surrounds you!
You read a blessed or uncursed scroll.
You are surrounded by darkness!
You read a cursed scroll, or a scroll of any beatitude while confused. Messages that may be appended depending if you are wielding a light source:
Your <light source> goes out!
Your <candle>'s flame is extinguished.
Your light source is extinguished.
Suddenly, the only light left comes from Sunsword!
You are wielding Sunsword.

UnNetHack

In UnNetHack, reading a scroll of light while confused has a different effect than reading a cursed scroll. If blessed or uncursed, it will summon 5-10 Yellow lights scattered throughout the level. If the scroll is cursed, it will instead summon up to 15 Black lights.

Strategy

While useful for lighting up a single room, a more efficient option is using a wand of light, spellbook of light, or a lamp, brass lantern or other light source. Therefore, this scroll is a good candidate for blanking.
