Tonal instruments are instruments which can be used to play the passtune when a player answers "n" at the "Improvise? (yn)" prompt. Tonal instruments are:
If you are stunned, confused, or hallucinating, you will improvise automatically with any tonal instrument, making it impossible to play the passtune.[1]
