The lunatic is one of the player roles in NetHack. Lunatics can be humans, orcs or gnomes and can be Neutral or Chaotic.

Guidebook entry: You don't have to be crazy to quest for the Amulet... but it helps!

Starting equipment

• a random +1 weapon
• random amulet
• random cloak
• random suit
• random boots
• 2 random non-magical tools
• potion of hallucination
• 2 other random potions
• 1 random spellbook
• 2 additional random items
• a bag of holding

In addition, if the weapon is a sling, crossbow, or bow, a supply of ammunition will be generated.

Hallucination

Lunatics are hallucinating at all times. This hallucination does not time out and cannot be cured by any of the normal means. For a lunatic, quaffing a potion of hallucination or eating a corpse that would ordinarily cause hallucination instead temporarily cures the hallucination for the same number of turns. Other circumstances that ordinarily cause hallucination (black lights, etc) instead have the effect of reading a blessed scroll of identify.
