A'gone

A'gone, @, is a unique monster that appears in the Drow Noble quest of dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. She is a drow that "guards" the Drow Noble's quest artifact, the Web of the Chosen.

A'gone was the rival of the female drow Noble hero, initially selected by Lolth to be her Chosen priestess: she was originally sent by a rival to the hero's quest leader and mother to discover the cause of sudden silence within a life-cavern colony previously used for food production—A'gone failed and was captured by the mind flayers that had taken over, with her mind subsequently destroyed, and she was imprisoned in a cell near the dwelling of the colony's elder brain, leaving it down to the hero to complete the mission in her stead.

A'gone herself is strong and an overlord to drowkind, possesses darksight and can be seen via infravision. Seeing A'gone in her current mindless state will cause the hero to lose sanity. A'gone has a single bearhug "attack" that cannot actually be used, and possesses sleep resistance and stoning resistance along with a base attack bonus of +0.5 to-hit per monster level and a weakness to iron.

Eating A'gone's corpse or tin or else quaffing her blood grants permanent sleep resistance, though this is cannibalism for a drow hero.

Chatting to A'gone will print one of nine possible responses, including a couple that imply she is fighting through amnesia and struggling against the control of the elder brain.

Generation

A'gone is not a valid polymorph form or genocide target, like other "proper" quest nemeses.

A'gone is always imprisoned within one of the cells on the edge of the female Drow Noble quest's goal level, with a set of iron bars blocking off access.

Strategy

As the goal level is undiggable, the nearby umber hulks cannot dig into the cells, so the hero will need a force bolt spell or a wand of striking to break the iron bars of A'gone's cell—this may be best done after dealing with the elder brain guarding the Bell of Opening.

A'gone herself is not only mindless, but completely harmless as well—her only defenses are her 60 MR and basic resistances. Once the more pressing threats are dealt with, there is little else to do beyond quickly putting A'gone out of her misery and retrieving the artifact.
