A drow matron:
| |
A drow matron, @, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The drow matron is a humanoid elven being that is the drow equivalent to the Elvenqueen: she is strong, possesses darkvision, can be seen via infravision, can pick up weapons, food and other items that she comes across, and is an overlord to drowkind. Drow matrons may turn traitor while tame. Drow matrons can reach level 30.
Driders are former drow matrons that have been transformed into centaur-esque drow-arachnid demihumans, according to their encyclopedia entry.
Drow matrons have a weapon attack and the ability to cast one clerical monster spell during each of their turns. Drow matrons have skilled prowess in martial combat, and possess sleep resistance and a weakness to iron.
Eating a drow matron corpse or tin, or quaffing her blood, grants temporary sleep resistance for a duration of 5,250 turns before physical size modifiers.
Generation
Randomly generated drow matrons are often created hostile. They are not a valid polymorph form.
Randomly generated drow matrons are accompanied by a group of hedrow warriors, and may accompany the groups of monsters generated alongside a randomly created dokkalfar eternal matriarch.
A drow matron can appear as the ruler of a randomly-generated throne room—her court may consist of unearthly drow-form yochlol, hedrow wizards, hedrow warriors, drow, sprow, swamp nymphs, giant spiders, cave lizards, large cave lizards, and quasits. The prisoners within her throne room may be any of the following monsters:
- Green-elves
- Grey-elves
- elf-lords
- elf-ladies
- mithril smiths
- nurses
- maids
- watchmen
- watch captains
- hedrow warriors
- drow captains
- drow matrons
- shadowsmiths
- driders
- priestesses of Ghaunadaur
- stjarna-alfr
- hobbits
- dwarves
- dwarf clerics
- dwarf lords
- dwarf smiths
- hill orcs

Drow matrons can appear as prisoners in the Castle throne room, and may also be found as a prisoner in generic throne rooms as well well as those ruled by any of the following monsters: an orc-captain, an ogre king, a vampire lord or vampire lady, an Elvenking or Elvenqueen, a rival drow matron, an embraced drowess, a Y-cultist patron, an orc of the ages of stars, the Necromancer, or the Avatar of Lolth.
Drow matrons can appear among the plague victims that are carried within sacks by hill giants on the Healer quest and Drow Healer quest, as well as those encountered outside sacks.
A temple to Lolth, Kiaransali or Ver'tas that is encountered by a female drow hero (outside of the Sanctum or Astral Plane) will have a drow matron as the altar's priestess: these drow matrons share level-based intrinsics with other priests, and are always generated with droven plate mail, a black signet ring, a droven helm, a pair of high boots, a khakkhara, and a +2 erosion-proofed viperwhip that has 2-4 heads and a single coating of either basic poison (with a 3⁄4 chance) or a paralyzing poison (with a 1⁄4 chance). All of a drow matron priestess's equipment will bear the holy symbol of their respective deity.
A normally-created drow matron can be generated with the following equipment: a suit of armor that bears Lolth's holy symbol and has a 7⁄8 chance of being droven plate mail or a noble's dress otherwise; a black signet ring that bears the emblem of their house; a droven cloak; a droven helm; a pair of high boots; a droven dagger; a droven crossbow paired with a stack of 12–35 drug-coated droven bolts; and a +2 viperwhip that has the following qualities and may be paired with the following weapons:
- There is a 1⁄20 chance that a drow matron's viperwhip has 2-4 heads, and will be accompanied by an iron khakkhara and 3 separate droven daggers.
- Otherwise, the viperwhip will have 1-3 heads and be paired with a droven short sword and a shadowsteel kite shield.
- In either case, the viperwhip will always have a single coating of either basic poison (with a 3⁄4 chance) or a paralyzing poison (with a 1⁄4 chance).
