A flashing lake:
| |
A flashing lake is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. Flashing lakes are hidden behind the veil, and will only become visible to the hero once they have attained between 16 and 23 insight.
Generation
- A flashing lake may be generated on the entrance to the Lost Cities with a 1⁄10 chance.
- A flashing lake may be generated on both versions of the first level of N'kai with a 3⁄4 chance.
- A flashing lake may be generated on the second level of N'kai with a 3⁄4 chance.
- A flashing lake may be generated on the third level of N'kai with a 3⁄4 chance.
- A flashing lake may be generated on the fourth level of N'kai with a 3⁄4 chance.
Description
If a flashing lake is chatted to while wielding an artifact, it will offer to exchange it for the dissipating bulwark thought. Doing so permanently removes the exchanged artifact from the game, and the flashing lake vanishes.
For roles with special invocation rituals, artifacts required for the invocation ritual cannot be exchanged as well, which includes The Pen of the Void, The Annulus, and The Silver Key. All artifacts that are guaranteed to generate in an alignment quest cannot be exchanged, such as the alignment keys and the Chaos Crystals. The artifacts of the Lords of the Abyss, the artifacts of the Lords of Nine, the artifacts of the Empyrial Lords, the Painting Fragment, the Key of Erebor and the three artifact spellbooks of secrets are similarly unable to be exchanged for the thought.
The dissipating bulwark thought requires 16 insight to become active, and will revert to its inert state if the hero ever drops below this threshold. While it is active, the hero gains extrinsic shock resistance.

Origin
The flashing lake is a monster that parallels the insight bath messengers present in the 2015 video game Bloodborne, who are inhabitants of the hunter's dream that will trade the hunter certain items in exchange for their insight. dissipating lake is an item analogous to dNetHack's dissipating bulwark thought, and is one of a large set of Caryll runes that can be found throughout the game. Up to three of these symbols could be memorized with the help of a rune tool to reduce the amount of bolt damage received. At higher tiers, the rune decreased bolt damage by larger amounts, with the highest tier rune decreasing it by 10%. Its description states: "A Caryll rune that transcribes inhuman sounds. This transcription of the Great Ones' inhuman voices ripples like a watery reflection. This rune means "Lake," and those who memorize it enjoy reduced bolt damage. Great volumes of water serve as a bulwark guarding sleep, and an augur of the eldritch Truth. Overcome this hindrance, and seek what is yours."
