GnollHack/Score

Score in GnollHack is gained through far-fewer activities than in vanilla NetHack, and is generally retooled to make higher scores more prestigious.

There are four ways to build score in GnollHack:

  1. Delving deeper into the dungeon
  2. Accomplishing certain things as any class, known as achievements
  3. Accomplishing certain things specific to your class, known as role-specific achievements
  4. Maintaining conducts all the way to your ascension -- dying with a conduct is worth nothing!

How score is calculated

First the game tallies your base score, and then it applies a bunch of multipliers depending on performance and certain game settings.

Base Score

Base score is calculated by the following:

BaseScore= (MaxDungeonLevel−1)*1000 +(AchievementCount)*50000 +(SmallAchievementCount)*5000 +(ConductScore)*10000 +(RoleScore)

  • MaxDungeonLevel is self-explanatory. (Unfortunately, the Elemental Planes do not add to your score.)
  • AchievementCount is the number of notable achievements your current run accomplishes, such as retrieving the Gladstone from Mine's End.
  • SmallAchievementCount is the number of small achievements your current run accomplishes, such as reading a novel.
  • ConductScore is set to zero on death; otherwise, various conducts add to it, while changing alignment subtracts from it.
  • RoleScore is capped at 600000. Every class has an optional quest that can be done once to gain points, along with either an item type that's scored at the end of a run or some repeatable way to get additional points.

GnollHack keeps track of another list of achievements across all runs; only some of them correspond to notable-or-small achievements that actually build score.

Conduct Score

The conduct score only matters if you ascend. Escaping the dungeon (such as through offering the Amulet of Yendor on the wrong high altar) does not count.

Conduct Score Summary Notes
Foodless 50 You never ate a comestible. Does not preclude vegan or vegetarian. (70 pts total)
Vegan 10 You never ate meat, nor any animal-based comestibles. Does not preclude vegetarian. (20 pts total)
Vegetarian 10 You never ate meat.
Atheist 15 You never prayed, used an altar, or paid for an aligned priest's services. Doesn't count offering the Amulet of Yendor.
Pacifist 60 You never killed anything... personally. Doesn't count letting pets or hirelings kill others.
Weaponless 5 You never hit with a wielded weapon.
Illiterate 30 You never read anything, and you never wrote anything either. Doesn't count reading random engravings or the Book of the Dead.
Polyless 2 You never polymorphed an object. Doesn't count monsters, but does count their eggs and corpses.
Polyselfless 2 You never changed form. Doesn't count polymorphing into your own race, but does count lycanthropy.
Genocideless 15 You never genocided a species with a scroll of genocide. Doesn't count committing genocide the old-fashioned way.
Wishless 15 You never wished for anything. Does not preclude artifact wishless. (20 pts total)
Artifact Wishless 5 You never wished for an artifact. Doesn't count getting artifacts as sacrifice gifts.
Zen 80 You spent the whole run blind. Requires a settings change. (Putting on a blindfold immediately doesn't count.)
Nudist 60 You spent the whole run naked. Requires a settings change. (Taking everything off right away doesn't count.)
Elberethless 10 You never engraved "Elbereth". Doesn't count engraving her last name, Gilthoniel.
Conflictless 15 You never caused conflict.
Boneless 2 You never entered a bones level. Bones levels can be disabled in the settings, to make this easier.
Petless 2 You spent the whole run without allies. Requires a settings change. (Killing your starting pet immediately doesn't count.)
Opposite -20 You put on a helm of opposite alignment. Possibly here because it lets you trick the alignment system.
Convert -20 You switched deities and changed alignments. Can be avoided by never sacrificing on cross-aligned altars.

The "have/collect" tasks require that you have those items when your run ends; either in your inventory, or in your sandalwood chest.

Ascension Multiplier

If you don't ascend, your ascension multiplier is 1. If you do ascend, your ascension multiplier is 450000TurnCount.

For the sake of scoring, your turn count is increased to 3125 if lower than that, and decreased to 200000 if higher than that. As a result, a successful ascension will always give a multiplier between 2 and 16.

Difficulty Multiplier

GnollHack has difficulty settings for each run, and the main price you pay for playing at an easier difficulty is a massive hit to your score. The exact calculation of this multiplier is 10DifficultyLevel.

Difficulty Level Value of Level Difficulty Multiplier
Standard -4 0.01
Experienced -3 0.03162
Adept -2 0.1
Veteran -1 0.3162
Expert 0 1
Master 1 3.162
Grand Master 2 10

"Modern Mode" Multiplier

If you play GnollHack with Classic Mode disabled, then permadeath is disabled as well. This incurs a "Modern Mode" multiplier of 1/3.

On top of that, every "true death" (a death your character experiences without the life saving property) further decreases the "Modern Mode" multiplier, though the further reduction comes after the game scores you for that death:

  • Having 1 true death makes it 1/9.
  • Having 2 true deaths makes it 1/27.
  • Having more than 2 true deaths makes it 127*(TrueDeaths−1); 3 true deaths makes it 1/54, for example.

GnollHack also comes with a "Casual Mode" setting, which disables scoring; that way, you won't clutter your high scores by choosing to continue from dying.
