Leprechaun (starting race)
- This article is about the starting race. For other uses such as the monster or monster class, see leprechaun (disambiguation).
The leprechaun is a playable race that is available to the hero in notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, and is a playable counterpart of the leprechaun monster. A leprechaun hero will appear as l if the showrace option is set on, and is part of the leprechaun monster class.
Leprechaun heroes are always chaotic in alignment unlike the normally-neutral leprechaun monster, and can be played as a Barbarian, Binder, Convict, Pirate, Rogue, Troubadour, or Wizard.
Racial benefits and restrictions
Leprechauns are tiny, demihuman and fey beings whose size puts them in a similar position to the gnome—their size severely limits their carrying capacity, and they are also lacking in terms of physical prowess and overall attribute caps compared to some other races of hero. Fortunately, their strength is the only truly-subpar attribute cap (being the same as that of an elf) while their other attribute caps are average at worst, and they more than compensate for it with a stellar dexterity cap and a high charisma cap. Leprechaun heroes start with the same teleportitis as leprechaun monsters do, and also possess intrinsic speed, stealth and disintegration resistance—they start with the ability to teleport at will (usually beginning with just enough power for it) and gain teleport control at experience level 7. Their special spell is detect treasure.
Leprechaun heroes have second-level low-light vision which allows them to see in dimly-lit areas, can steal gold with their melee attacks like normal leprechauns, and possess other highly-unique abilities tied to gold:
- A leprechaun hero carrying gold pieces experiences a decrease in their inventory's total weight that is proportionate to the amount of gold they have in their open inventory. This "negative weight" offsets many of the typical problems that the hero's size would present for carrying capacity.
- Leprechaun heroes will always start with 2000 gold, and instead of attribute boosts they will be given an additional 100 gold per point of strength or constitution required to avoid being encumbered by their starting inventory—a leprechaun descendant is also given further additional gold to ensure that they can pick up their inherited artifact.
- Furthermore, the leprechaun's warping ability is tied to gold as well. They are capable of gold detection, which behaves as reading the non-cursed scroll of gold detection does, and can teleport to any open square with gold on it.
A leprechaun's starting comestibles will be made smaller to fit their size, and cram rations and food rations will be replaced with lembas wafers due to their much lower weight.
Gnomes and dwarves will always generate as hostile towards a leprechaun hero.
