| Roles in notdNetHack |
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the Barbarian is one of the roles from NetHack that is available to the hero.
Barbarians can be humans, incantifiers, orcs, vampires, or half-dragons, and can start as neutral or chaotic. In notdNetHack, they can also be neutral ents, neutral etherealoids, chaotic leprechauns, or salamanders of either alignment in addition to the listed races—in notnotdNetHack, they can additionally be chiropterans or octopodes of either alignment.
Starting equipment
Each Barbarian starts with the following equipment:
- Either of these weapon sets (with equal probability):
- a +0 two-handed sword and a +0 axe
- a +0 battle-axe and a +0 short sword
- a +0 ring mail
- a +0 pair of high boots
- 1-2 food rations
- 3-6 torches
Orcish Barbarians receive an orcish short sword in place of a short sword, orcish ring mail in place of ring mail, and two additional stacks of 1-2 random comestibles. Incantifier Barbarians receive a robe in place of their ring mail, and have their food rations replaced with scrolls of food detection. Leprechaun Barbarians will be given at least 2000 gold, and will have their food rations replaced with lembas wafers. Chiropteran Barbarians have their high boots replaced by a pair of leather gauntlets.
Barbarians start with knowledge of all non-magical weapons and armor, in addition to any applicable racial equipment.
The Barbarian's default starting pet is a little dog named Idefix.
Intrinsics
Barbarians gain the following intrinsic properties upon reaching the given experience levels:
- Level 1: poison resistance
- Level 7: speed
- Level 14: extra attack
- Level 15: stealth
- Level 30: extra attack
Attributes
Barbarians have 75 points to distribute among their starting attributes like most other roles. Orcish Barbarians have -20 points, and descendant Barbarians have -20 points, giving them both a total of 55 to distribute—heroes who are both instead have -25 points, for a total of 50 to distribute.
The Barbarian's starting attributes are distributed as follows, assuming a 75-point start:
| Attributes | Strength | Dexterity | Constitution | Intelligence | Wisdom | Charisma | Remaining |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum attributes | 16 | 15 | 16 | 7 | 7 | 6 | 8 |
| Distribution percentages | 30% | 20% | 30% | 6% | 7% | 7% | |
| Mean w/ standard deviation (human) | 18/00.89±1.34 | 16.72±1.01 | 17.69±0.59 | 7.60±0.87 | 7.69±0.91 | 6.60±0.87 |
The means and standard deviations were calculated for NetHack via simulation, whose source code can be found on the role article's talk page, and assumes that all given roles are played as humans—non-human races will have different attribute means as a result of different attribute maximums. Due to the distribution of attributes having a wider variance among roles and races, these calculations may not be wholly accurate to this set of variants.
Skills
Barbarians have the following skills available to them before racial adjustments:
| Healer skills | |
|---|---|
| Max | Skills |
| Basic |
|
| Skilled |
|
| Expert |
|
| Master |
|
Barbarians start with Basic skill in axe, bare-handed combat, and either short sword or two-handed sword depending on their starting weapons. They use the intelligence stat to cast spells, and their special spell is haste self.
Special rules
Barbarians gain an extra weapon attack at experience level 14, and gain a second one at experience level 30: the first extra attack is made with a -10 to-hit penalty, and the second is made with a -20 to-hit penalty. The extra attacks also apply when performing two weapon combat, with an additional pair of weapon attacks (using the main weapon and the offhand weapon in order) per extra attack available - the to-hit penalty is only applied to the main weapon in each instance.
Barbarians have a 1⁄5 chance of performing a shattering blow with two-handed weapons, versus 1⁄10 for other roles.
Rank titles
The status line displays one of the following ranks for the corresponding experience levels:
- XL 1-2: Plunderer/Plunderess
- XL 3-5: Pillager
- XL 6-9: Bandit
- XL 10-13: Brigand
- XL 14-17: Raider
- XL 18-21: Reaver
- XL 22-25: Slayer
- XL 26-29: Chieftain/Chieftainess
- XL 30: Conqueror/Conqueress
Gods
The Barbarian pantheon is based on Robert E. Howard's Conan mythos. Their first sacrifice gift is either Cleaver or the Atlantean Royal Sword, with the gifted artifact matching the skill of their starting two-handed weapon.
Set serves as the chaotic unholy deity for vampire heroes that worship within the pantheon.
Quest
The Barbarian's quest sees them fighting Thoth Amon for The Heart of Ahriman, an artifact ruby. The Heart of Ahriman grants magic resistance, reflection, half spell damage, drain resistance, fire resistance, and poison resistance while carried. It can be invoked to act as a scroll of remove curse of the same beatitude: this will both end punishment and uncurse items in the open inventory appropriately, and if the hero is confused it will randomly bless or curse items appropriately and then mask the beatitude of all items affected (regardless of if they were blessed or cursed). If The Heart of Ahriman is cursed, invoking it will uncurse the artifact itself and end punishment with no other effects, even while confused.
