A potion of goat's milk is a type of magical potion that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. It will always appears as a "black potion" when unidentified. When quaffed, a potion of goat's milk has effects similar to those of a potion of full healing and potion of restore ability.
Generation
Potions of goat's milk do not randomly generate but may be wished for or found in bones.
Corpses eaten by a mouth of the goat—whether or not it is hidden behind the veil—has a low luck-based chance of leaving behind a potion of goat's milk.
If the hero has enough credit to claim a minor boon, selecting 'her Healing' when applying a holy symbol of the black mother will mimic the effects of an uncursed potion of goat's milk. The holy symbol's effect is amplified when enough credit to claim a major boon are currently held, with the healing effect mimicking a blessed potion's effects.
Description
Quaffing a potion of goat's milk pierces the veil and grants 1 insight, as well as reducing sanity by 4–16. The potion also permanently confers the goat-ridden madness, which causes tentacles to erupt from the hero's at low sanity, simultaneously damaging the hero and attacking nearby monsters. The potion will also increment the hero's mutagen counter by one: the first mutation can be claimed with 3 mutagen, but subsequent mutations will require an additional amount of mutagen equal to the amount necessary for the previous mutation plus one more.
Drinking non-cursed goat's milk will heal the drinker for up to 400 HP, curing hallucination and blindness, and a hero doing so will exercise constitution and strength. A non-cursed potion will also cure blindness and sickness and boost the drinker's maximum HP if quaffing it would heal them to full HP: an uncursed potion increases maximum HP by 4, while a blessed potion increases it by 8. Either case is subject to diminishing returns the more their maximum hp is increased. Monsters can quaff this potion for the same effects, and will do so at low HP.
A hero quaffing a non-cursed potion of goat's milk will restore one lost experience level if they have any up to their remembered maximum level. A blessed potion has the additional effect of setting the hero's experience to be 1 point away from hitting the next level, if they are still below their remembered maximum after having regained that level. A non-cursed potion also restores one attribute currently below their remembered maximum back to its peak or fully restores all attributes to their remembered maximum, if the potion was blessed. Non-cursed potions will stop all bleeding and dissolve all lodged morgul shards, and a blessed potion will additionally cure any mummy rot afflicting the hero. Unlike potions of healing, goat's milk does not advance gray mold infection when quaffed.
A cursed potion of goat's milk deals 40 damage when drunk and inflicts sickness instead, setting the turns left to live between 20 and (19 + constitution), or reducing the remaining turns to live by roughly 2⁄3 if the hero was already ill.
Hitting a monster with a wielded or thrown potion of goat's milk will restore them to full HP; hitting Pestilence with one will deal damage to them. Inhaling the vapors from a potion of any beatitude has no effect.
Strategy
Potions of goat's milk are exceptionally rare outside of their aforementioned use through the Black Mother's cult boons and has much the same effect as a potion of full healing. The effects of a quaffed potion of goat's milk through the holy symbol of the black mother may substitute for potions of full healing, though they are limited by the current amount of cult credit stored in the item, which cannot be verified. Care needs to be taken so as to not run out of credit in a pinch.
While quaffing blessed goat's milk is a decent means of partially restoring lost levels, players looking to regain all of their levels will most likely prefer a potion of restore ability, since it does not affect the hero's maximum experience level. The potion of goat's milk or full healing may be preferred in cases where a player decides a lower maximum level is easier to work with, e.g. post-Quest.
