A saber-toothed tiger, f, is a type of monster that appears in EvilHack. The saber-toothed tiger is a huge, carnivorous and thick-skinned feline animal that has infravision and can be seen via infravision, and it is the most dangerous member of the feline monster class. Cavepeople are the only role of hero that can throw food at saber-toothed tigers to tame them, and are also the only role that can apply barding and saddles to a saber-toothed tiger and ride them as a steed. As a woodland creature, Druids can chat with saber-toothed tigers to pacify them, and Druids that reach experience level 14 can wildshape themselves into the form of a saber-toothed tiger.
A saber-toothed tiger has two claw attacks and a bite attack, and may go berserk when its HP is low enough. They possess cold resistance.
Generation
Saber-toothed tigers are only randomly generated in the Ice Queen's Realm, and normally-created saber-toothed tigers are always hostile.
A saber-toothed tiger is always generated on the middle floor of the Ice Queen's Realm, where it is placed adjacent to the wizard corpse named Tim the Enchanter at level creation, and another is generated in front of the castle doors on the bottom floor of the Ice Queen's Realm during level creation. They may also be generated in the treasure zoos inside the Ice Queen's dwelling.
Hostile saber-toothed tigers can be generated by the summon nasties monster spell if it is cast in the Ice Queen's Realm.
Casting the summon animal spell at Expert in evocation spells has a 1⁄5 chance of generating a tame saber-toothed tiger.
Origin
Machairodontinae is an extinct subfamily of carnivorous mammals within the family Felidae (also known as "true cats"), and contains many of the extinct predators commonly known as "saber-toothed cats", including the famed genus Smilodon. These saber-toothed cats are the best-known genera of saber-toothed predators and were found across most of the world, living from about 16 million until about 11,000 years ago. The species is named for their massive canine teeth: Machairodontinae means "dagger-tooth" and is derived from the Greek μάχαιρα (machaira, "sword").
Previously, some species of saber-toothed cats were called "saber-toothed tigers", though machairodonts are not closely related to any living feline species; DNA analysis published in 2005 confirmed and clarified that the Machairodontinae diverged early from the ancestors of modern cats in their evolution.
Encyclopedia entry
The saber-toothed tiger, a common term for a member of the genus Smilodon, is perhaps the most well-known of the saber-toothed cats. Notable for the long, dagger-like fangs from which the name of the genus is derived, these apex predators stalked mammoths, bison, and other large herbivores across the plains of prehistoric North America.
