A shimmering dragon, D, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The shimmering dragon is a type of dragon with displacement, which causes 12 (50%) of attacks to miss it outright unless the attacker and the dragon are stuck to the other party in some way, the attack is somehow engulfed by the dragon or the attacker is using a Silver Flame-empowered weapon. All 14 of a shimmering dragon's AC points are in the natural category, and it has 5 points of natural damage reduction.

Like many other dragons, a shimmering dragon is carnivorous, oviparous, can see invisible, and it has a strong, quadrupedal and thick-skinned form with flight-capable wings, an elongated head and forelimbs that can manipulate objects. A shimmering dragon is also visible via infravision and will seek out gold, gems and other magical items to collect.

A shimmering dragon has a breath weapon that is randomized from the following breath types: magic missile, fire, frost, sleep gas, disintegration, lightning, poison clouds, and acid. It also has a strong bite attack, two claw attacks, and a powerful tail slap that occurs each global turn and targets an opponent adjacent to the dragon. Shimmering dragons possess magic resistance.

Generation

Randomly generated shimmering dragons are always created hostile. A baby shimmering dragon can grow up into a shimmering dragon.

Shimmering dragons can appear among the monsters randomly generated by either sitting on a throne or looting it while the hero is confused and carrying gold (provided there is no chest on the level).

Shimmering dragons have a 13 chance of dropping a set of uncursed +0 shimmering dragon scales upon death along with their corpse (which is guaranteed to drop under normal circumstances, e.g. they are not disintegrated), and the chance is reduced to 120 if the dragon was revived—if the dragon is turned to stone, their statue will contain scales with the same probabilities.
