Strangulation is a property in NetHack that induces a delayed instadeath by choking.

The only source of the property is wearing an amulet of strangulation.

Description

Strangulation abuses the hero's strength, impedes their ability to breathe and will kill them outright in six turns. While being strangled, a hero cannot performing several actions that require breathing: they are unable to quaff, apply whistles and other instruments, read scrolls while blind, or cast spells.[1][2][3]

A hero that polymorphs into a monster that either lacks a head, or is both breathless and mindless, cannot be killed by strangling[4]—breathlessness alone will not protect the hero, since strangulation will also stop blood flow to their brain.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, the poisonous passive attack of disgusting molds and black molds have no effect on a hero being strangled.

Gaining invulnerability from a potion of invulnerability does not prevent death from strangulation.

GruntHack

In GruntHack, being engulfed by a gelatinous cube or water elemental causes strangulation that kills you in three turns.

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, the hero has a breath timer, and strangulation or other causes of air loss instead decrement this breath timer, killing the hero once it reaches zero—this means that strangulation is not guaranteed to be fatal, but is far more dangerous if it occurs while the hero has a low enough breath timer. Successfully praying can cure strangulation if it is caused by choking, while obtaining the breathless property (e.g. via an unbreathing polyform) ignores strangulation and allows it to time out harmlessly.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, gelatinous cubes, water elementals and sea dragons have an engulfing attack that causes strangulation as in GruntHack, and kills the hero in four turns as opposed to three.
