For the demon lord in SpliceHack, see Buer (SpliceHack).

Buer, who walks all places is a spirit that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack.

Ritual, seal and taboo

There are no additional restrictions or requirements to bind Buer. If the binding ritual fails, the hero will be healed for an amount of HP equal to 5 spirit dice.

To remain bound to Buer, a hero cannot use death magic, such as the finger of death.

Mark

The legs of a hero that has Buer bound bifurcate into four cloven-hooved feet that can be seen from a distance, but can be hidden by wearing boots.

Benefits

While Buer is bound, the hero gains extra HP regeneration, with the rate being equal to roughly 6 times their spirit die size every 90 turns: this is affected by a lit Atma Weapon as normal. Buer also grants the hero skill in healing spells and martial arts, and binding Buer once will permanently un-restrict the martial arts skill.

Buer's active powers are as follows:

Their passive powers are as follows:

  • Keen Nose: The hero gains food appraisal that lasts for the duration of the binding.

Strategy

Buer's Gift of Healing is perhaps best used to keep a hero's pets alive, since monster healing is far slower at 1 HP per 20 turns.

As a monster

In notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Buer, z, also appears as a monster that can be summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder. They are a strong zruty-like animal that is considered both male and female, and can be seen via infravision.

Buer possesses a bite attack that inflicts a constitution-draining poison, as well as a kick attack.

Like many summoned spirits, Buer cannot be tamed.

Generation

Buer is first generated when summoned from their seal by an Illithanachronounbinder. They are always created hostile, and are not a valid form for normal polymorph.

Buer is always generated with the uncursed Talisman of Buer: The Talisman of Buer is an artifact amulet of life saving that grants regeneration and sustain ability while worn, and can be invoked to heal the wearer much like The Staff of Aesculapius or Release from Care, which restores an amount of HP equal to half the hero's maximum while curing sickness, blindness and sliming.

Buer does not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Below this point, there are major spoilers for the Illithanachronounbinder role. They can be accessed by selecting the "Role spoiler" tab.

Outside of Buer's poisonous bite and 16 speed, they are rather unremarkable for a monster that an Illithanachronounbinder must face sooner or later, especially when binding Buer permanently unlocks the martial arts skill for them.

If Buer is killed after being summoned, they can be encountered again in the Void, a branch accessed by opening the high altar of Ilsensine the Fallen as an Illithanachronounbinder using the invoke effect of The Elder Cerebral Fluid. Buer is generated along with many other spirits of the near void on the first floor of the branch, and is generated with the "whispers" template, which makes them nonliving.

Messages

You hear hooved footfalls approaching quickly, though you can't make out from what direction.
They set an odd tempo; very regular and faster by far than any animal of four legs could comfortably keep.
The footfalls reach a crescendo, and an odd creature rolls into the seal in front of you.
The creature's five legs are arranged in a star pattern, and to move it rolls from foot to foot.
At the center of the wheel is a lion's head, complete with a glorious mane.
The creature speaks to you; and its voice, though deep, is clearly that of a woman.
"I am Buer, <title>, <condition> to <fate>."
You attempted to bind Buer.
"Will you walk with me?"
You successfully bound Buer to yourself.
"I will walk beside you."
You successfully bound Buer to The Pen of the Void.
I wish you well as you walk your path.
You failed to bind Buer due to a lack of open slots for spirits of the Near Void, but you were still healed for 5 spirit dice of HP.
