Description

While worn, the Mirrored Mask grants reflection and half spell damage, and has a 1⁄2 chance (50%) of re-directing a spell that targets the wearer back at the original caster.

History

The Mirrored Mask is introduced in dNetHack version 3.21.3.1, where it is initially known as The Mask of Many Faces before being given its current name, and functions much differently: it can be invoked while wielded or worn to attempt transforming the hero into an adjacent monster, and if the monster is below 1⁄3 of their maximum HP (or 1⁄6 for unique monsters) then they are killed without leaving a corpse behind, while the mask assumes the form of the slain monster. After killing a monster this way, the Mirrored Mask will polymorph the hero into the monster whose form it has assumed, including monsters that are otherwise invalid polymorph forms—this polymorph's duration is dependent on the monster level relative to the experience level of the hero, is heavily reduced for monsters that are invalid polymorph forms, ignores unchanging, and can be ended early by invoking the Mirrored Mask again.

The Mirrored Mask is given its current behavior in version 3.24.0.
