A tonitrus is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a one-handed blunt weapon that uses the mace skill and is made of iron. At skilled and expert, it gains the hew and stunning strike expert traits. It appears as a thunder mace when unidentified.

When applied, the tonitrus will light up the area in a 2-square radius, acting as a light source for 9 turns. When lit, it will gain up to +3d10+3xEnchantment shock damage: +1d10+Enchantment while it continues lit, +1d10+Enchantment against monsters with telepathy, +1d10+Enchantment against shock vulnerable monsters. This may destroy rings and wands as usual and is fully negated by shock resistance. Will appear as "crackling" instead of the usual "lit".

Generation

Does not randomly generate.

For Undead hunters, there is a 90% chance of a tonitrus generating in their quest home level, in a box next to a forge in the top left part of the map.

Strategy

Characters wishing to use the tonitrus for an extended amount of time may wish to make it silver or gold (bonus blunt and holy damage) to supplement its low damage output. Although it would be a viable early to mid game weapon, the tonitrus lacks the necessary damage output to keep up with monster hp growth and by the time most characters hit the neutral quest will already be underperforming. Most Undead hunters who get them will likely also already have invested skill slots elsewhere. Its bonus damage is an advantage against the monsters present in the quest mostly just in theory, as it is largely superseded by silver flame object properties, which also have a much greater impact in the fights against the big threats in the quest (Index wolf, Moon's Chosen). Its most useful trait for most use cases will likely be its ability to deal with mist wolves relatively quickly. However, there are better ways to obtain lightning damage (namely through smithing) that don't require constantly re-applying a weapon. Non-undead hunters will likely benefit the most from this weapon's blunt damage, if they happen to find them in a bones drop.

Origin

The Tonitrus is based on the trick weapon of the same name from the 2015 game Bloodborne.

The name "tonitrus" is Latin for thunder, plural "tonitrūs".
