Xiuhcoatl is the Archeologist quest artifact in EvilHack and Hack'EM. It is the prize given for completing the Archeologist quest, and its default alignment is chaotic. Its base item type is an atlatl.
Generation
For Archeologists, Xiuhcoatl is always generated on the goal level of the Archeologist quest, where it is placed on the same square as the Minion of Huhetotl along with the Bell of Opening.
If Xiuhcoatl is wished for by a hero of another role, there is a 1⁄x chance (where x is the amount of previous artifact wishes) of it being created successfully—if successful, Lord Carnarvon will generate as the hostile owner of the artifact, placed adjacent to the hero with the artifact in his possession.
Description
While carried, Xiuhcoatl grants telepathy. While wielded, it grants fire resistance, has +1d5 to-hit and +1d24 fire damage against monsters without fire resistance, and can be thrown similar to Mjollnir, with a range two squares higher than other thrown weapons. Invoking Xiuhcoatl toggles levitation similar to The Heart of Ahriman.
Xiuhcoatl will return to the wielder's hand 99⁄100 of the time when thrown if they have enough dexterity: the required dexterity stat is 10 for tortle Archeologists, 18 for other Archeologists, and 21 for non-Archeologists. A hero that is not confused, stunned, blind, hallucinating, or fumbling when a thrown Xiuhcoatl returns will catch it 99⁄100 of the time, and it will otherwise land at their feet or hit them with equal probability.
