A crystal ooze:
|
A crystal ooze, b, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The crystal ooze is a type of acidic blob monster that is not only capable of swimming, but is also naturally invisible while moving over moats and pools of water.
A crystal ooze has a paralyzing touch attack, a second touch attack that can drown targets, and a passive attack that induces corrosion. Crystal oozes resist blunt damage and possess fire resistance, cold resistance, sleep resistance, poison resistance, acid resistance, and stoning resistance.
A crystal ooze corpse is acidic to eat, and eating a crystal ooze corpse or tin cures stoning on the first bite.
Generation
Crystal oozes are not randomly generated, and normally-generated crystal oozes are always created hostile.
A single crystal ooze is generated within the first catacombs section of the Mithadir Chaos Quest at level creation, near the northern edge of the pool surrounding the up stair.
Strategy
The crystal ooze is an incredibly rare sight - even though it is not difficult to kill, players should be wary of its paralyzing touch if they lack a source of free action, and should not give it an opportunity to potentially drown the hero even if they have the property. In addition, be mindful of its passive corrosion, which can be annoying for weapon maintenance.
Origin
The crystal ooze is a type of blob creature that appears in Dungeons & Dragons, and debuts in the 1st edition Monster Manual II. Crystal oozes are an offshoot species of gray ooze with translucent, glass-like bodies that have occasional swirls of white. While this makes them very hard to spot in similarly-clear water, crystal oozes usually prefer to inhabit dark, murky pools in order to better train their camouflage. Though adapted to life in water, crystal oozes are still capable of surviving outside it for many hours, and frequently leave their aquatic dwellings to hunt for prey.
Crystal oozes lash out at opponents in a serpentine manner, attempting to submerge or smother them. Though they cannot corrode metal like their gray ooze kin, crystal oozes can directly poison cloth, flesh and wood; they are capable of paralyzing almost any living being they directly touch, and will usually consume a paralyzed victim in short order. Crystal oozes are impervious to harm from acid, fire, heat, or cold, and can only be damaged by magical and electrical energy, as well as raw damage from metal weapons.
A crystal ooze's diet consisted of almost any non-metal material, and their lairs often contain leftover metal weapons and pieces of armor from previous meals. As with gray oozes, crystal oozes reproduce by budding (crystal) pods, which hatch into newly formed gray oozes after up to 10 days; the oozes may live alongside their offspring, but would consume them if food is scarce.

What's worse, the evil residue has spawned a creature.
A gigantic crystal ooze lives in the pool and attacks
anything that enters the chamber - not out of hunger,
but spite. It particularly enjoys attacking sods as
soon as they emerge from the bottom of the shaft,
trying to grab them and drag them down into the foul,
green soup.
