The dwarf, h, is a monster that appears in NetHack.

Generation
Dwarves are common in the early game, and are especially easy to find in the Gnomish Mines; they will be peaceful towards lawful and/or dwarven characters. They often carry a pick-axe or a dwarvish mattock, and will tunnel wherever they can, digging out large portions of the level. Dwarves can also be generated with daggers or dwarvish spears.
A dwarf sometimes wears a dwarvish mithril-coat, a dwarvish iron helm, a dwarvish roundshield, or iron shoes, all of which are good armor types. The dwarvish cloak offers no AC protection, but does provide MC1, and can protect the body armor underneath it from erosion. The probability of mithril is 1⁄12.[1]
Corpses
A "dwarf corpse" is dropped by the dwarf zombie and dwarf mummy. It is also found in graves left by player dwarves in bones.
Strategy
Dwarves are slow-moving, but hard-hitting; with a base damage of 1d8, they can inflict a significant amount of damage to an early player. However, due to their slow speed, they can usually be outrun. Neutral and chaotic adventurers can quickly get a pick-axe and some good armor by killing a dwarf, though they may have some trouble if the dwarf is wearing mithril and/or their AC/weapon enchantment is high. Lawful adventurers will also often choose to kill dwarves for their equipment anyway, since the penalty for attacking a peaceful monster is comparatively small; they can also use pets, e.g. if they are trying to maximize their alignment or else taking advantage of pets only being attacked in response to attacking themselves.
