A pincer staff is a type of trident that appears in dNetHack, notnotdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack. It is a huge piercing weapon that has a base-material of shell. It appears as a claw-ended staff when unidentified.

The Fallingstar Mandibles is an artifact pincer staff. A mercurial pincer staff can be named The Sky Reflected and merged into The Amalgamated Skies while retaining its special insight effects.

Generation

Pincer staves do not randomly generate, but may be wished for.

Kuo toa whips have a 17 chance of being generated with a medium-sized pincer staff with an enchantment ranging from +1 to +7.

Most smiths cannot duplicate pincer staves, with the exception of shadowsmiths.

Description

All pincer staves are insight weapons, gaining bonus insight damage when wielded by Madpeople or while currently bound to Ose. Additionally, pincer staves gain the following effects as insight increases:

  • At 10 insight, pincer staves gain double base damage for attacking the same monster, reset after attacking another monster.
  • At 50 insight, pincer staves gain triple base damage, if attacking a monster that isn't wearing armor. If attacking a monster that is wearing armor, or if being attacked while wearing armor, 1 armor piece is chosen at random and subject to a magic resistance check, being unequiped and dropped to the floor on failure. Regular armor pieces resist with a 15 (20%) chance. Artifact armor, imperial elven armor, and armor that has been improved with columnar crystals instead resist with a 45 (80%) chance.

At Skilled and Expert skill, pincer staves gain the stop thrust expert trait.

So they stood, each in his place, neither moving a finger's
breadth back, for one good hour, and many blows were given
and received by each in that time, till here and there were
sore bones and bumps, yet neither thought of crying "Enough,"
or seemed likely to fall from off the bridge. Now and then
they stopped to rest, and each thought that he never had seen
in all his life before such a hand at quarterstaff. At last
Robin gave the stranger a blow upon the ribs that made his
jacket smoke like a damp straw thatch in the sun. So shrewd
was the stroke that the stranger came within a hair's breadth
of falling off the bridge; but he regained himself right
quickly, and, by a dexterous blow, gave Robin a crack on the
crown that caused the blood to flow. Then Robin grew mad
with anger, and smote with all his might at the other; but
the stranger warded the blow, and once again thwacked Robin,
and this time so fairly that he fell heels over head into the
water, as the queen pin falls in a game of bowls.
