Smith (dNetHack)

Smithing refers to the service provided by smiths, the humanoid monster and shopkeepers in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack.

Description

When chatted to, a smith may respond with the following:

"I need a forge!"
Smith does not have access to a forge/shop. Needs to be taken close to a forge or into a shop to allow choosing services.
"I need to rebuild my stock of <resource>!"
Smith has access to a forge/shop but does not have enough of the resource to provide services. Contribute to their stock by smelting down items.

Otherwise, a smith will open the following menu:
Services Available:

  1. Ask for some armor.
  2. Ask for a tool.
  3. Ask for a weapon.
  4. Ask for a copy of an item.
  5. Contribute some <resource>.*

Note: Items smelted down are irretrievably lost. Do not choose an item you wish to keep, only raw material.

All smiths have some basic weapons, armor and tools they can make. The exact item type will vary by smith although similarities between item lists do occur. Some smiths also allow object properties to be imbued on items they make. This will never be an option for items they're copying.

Smiths will only produce items of a material type that they work with for the most part — masks made by human smiths will be made of iron while masks made by a mithril smith will be made of mithril instead. Exceptions to this will be noted below.

The following monsters are smiths. Material accepted is given in parentheses:

  1. Takes comestibles. See the section on Dracae for details.
  2. Takes chunks of fossil dark.
  3. See section on treesingers.

Starting stockpile

Smiths start with the following stockpiles of material when generated:

Name: Resource: Aum:
Dracae Eldarin Biomass 0
Dwarf smith Iron/Silver 1000/500[1]
Goblin smith Iron 1000
Human smith Iron 1000[2]
Mithril smith Mithril 303
Oona Platinum 0
Shadowsmith Shadowsteel 400
Treesinger Wood 0
  1. If generated below dlvl 14, else 0 aum for both silver and iron.
  2. If generated below dlvl 14 or is a shopkeeper, else 0 aum.

Contributing to a smiths stockpile is based on an item's weight. Any item can be smelted down as long as it is of the appropriate material to the smith. Since most weapons are made of iron, sourcing it will be the easiest. For more specific materials such as silver mithril and platinum sourcing them is dependent on either collecting the rare alternative object material death drops or making use of the silver flame (major spoilers!!).
Shadowsmiths only accept chunks of fossil dark as raw material and not shadowsteel items, which is incredibly rare but can be found on rare occasion or wished for.

If an item is sourced from a shop and was stolen or hasn't been paid for yet smiths will refuse to accept it as raw material. Chunks of unrefined mithril are gems which can be found on the goal level of the Dwarf Noble quest. Up to 12 individual pieces will be generated on level creation (10% chance each) in the walls to the left and to the right as well as in the lava. The lower filler levels may also contain up to 3 pieces (10% chance each) as well as a chunk of fossil dark (20% chance) embedded in the pillars.

Special smiths

Some smiths can circumvent restrictions imposed on copying items and may also offer additional services besides those seen with regular smiths. Listed below are the lists summarizing what normal and special items each smith offers, followed by any special restrictions, additional services and object properties bestowed on smithed items if applicable. Note that even if an item is listed in a smith's special items list it will not be made available when asking for items, only when asking for the copy of said item.

The Dracae are special primordial high-caste Eladrin that appear as the precursor Eladrin race 18 of the time, determined at the start of the game. You can check whether they are the precursor race in your game with the Oracle by asking for "the location of the primordial ones" in the menu under glimpses of things to come. If they aren't the precursor race in the current game, this smithing service is completely unavailable, unless the character is a tourist and wishes for a figurine of a Dracae Eladrin.

The Dracae will also offer to incarnate a new follower, which will create a loyal pet Eladrin next to you. The creation of pets through this manner decreases the Dracae's available biomass. The type of Eladrin that can be created like this are the following:

Name Coure Eladrin Noviere Eladrin Bralani Eladrin Fierre Eladrin Shierre Eladrin Ghaele Eladrin
Tulani Eladrin Gae Eladrin Brighid Eladrin Uiscerre Eladrin Caillea Eladrin

Oona is the last "boss" of the law quest. She holds the third key of law. She will never generate peaceful, even if the character is lawful. She will not offer her smithing services until either tamed or pacified, which can be a bit difficult due to her high MR score of 77.

Shadowsmiths are special smiths that do not require a forge for their services. However, they can only offer their services while standing in an unlit square, including ones illuminated by a light source, and are the only smiths that can circumvent the restriction imposed on copying insight weapons.

Treesingers are special in that they do not require a forge to create items. Instead, a treesinger needs to be close to a tree to make items. A treesinger also does not have a stockpile of wood they keep track of, instead for as long the treesinger is next to a tree they can create items indefinetely. A non-tame treesinger will still charge for their services. All items made by a treesinger are made of wood, with the exception of flimsy items, which are instead made of cloth (an item made of cloth or flimsier material will still be made of that material when copied).

Other smiths

Dwarvish smiths have access to both silver and iron works. When chatted to the player will first be prompted if they wish to commision silverwork. Exiting out of this prompt or answering no will bring up the ironworks services. The stockpiles of iron and silver are counted seperately and have different thresholds. They will occasionally generate as prisoners in throne rooms.

Human smiths will occasionally generate as prisoners in throne rooms. Additionally, all shopkeepers that sell armors and weapons (including general stores and human elsheva shopkeepers) have a 13 chance of also being smiths, which changes their monster type to human smith instead of shopkeeper. They retain all normal interactions from shopkeepers but will also offer smithing services. After chatting with them and exiting their shopkeeper services they will prompt whether you wish to ask about smithing services.

Mithril smith:

Weapons Armor Tools

Mithril smiths are elven monsters. They will occasionally generate as prisoners in throne rooms.

Cancellation

Some smiths rely on their magic to create items. These smiths will be unable to offer smithing services if they are cancelled. The following smiths are affected by cancellation:

  • Oona
  • Treesingers
  • Shadowsmiths

All other smiths will still offer their smithing services even if cancelled but otherwise follow normal rules for cancellation.

Copying items

A blacksmith can make a copy of any item that you show them via the copy an item option in smithing services window. The following item types, however cannot be replicated:

The following item types are normally unreplicable: [1]

Encyclopedia

Dracae Eladrin

The eladrins are the native race of Arborea, just as the devils are associated with the Nine Hells and the demons with the Abyss. They're wild and free beings who exult in their own existence and live a life of song and celebration. The eladrins aid all people of good hearts against the forces of evil, but seek to do so with individual acts of kindness or heroism.

Dwarf smith:

It looked to Sacharissa that the only tools a dwarf needed were his axe and some means of making fire. That'd eventually get him a forge, and with that he could make simple tools, and with those he could make complex tools, and with complex tools a dwarf could more or less make anything.

Human smith

These strange creatures live mostly on the surface of the earth, gathering together in societies of various forms, but occasionally a stray will descend into the depths and commit mayhem among the dungeon residents who, naturally, often resent the intrusion of such beasts. They are capable of using weapons and magic, and it is even rumored that the Wizard of Yendor is a member of this species.

Oona

The Morwel is the queen of the Eladrin.
The Morwel has always been queen.
The Eladrin took no side in the war of Law and Chaos.

Treesinger

I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold,
and leaves of gold there grew:
Of wind I sang, a wind there came
and in the branches blew.
Beyond the Sun, beyond the Moon,
the foam was on the Sea,
And by the strand of Ilmarin
there grew a golden Tree.
