A dretch, i, is a type of monster that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM and Hack'EM. The dretch is a type of minor demon that is a weaker relative of the imp: dretches have almost-identical stats and attributes to them other than a lower base monster level and difficulty, along with a chance of a tame dretch turning traitor. In Hack'EM, the dretch is also not carnivorous unlike most other minor demons.
A dretch has a single claw attack and possesses a weakness to silver.
Hostile dretches will taunt the hero with random demonic maledictions when attacking, moving or chatted to.
Generation
Randomly generated dretches may be generated as peaceful towards a chaotic hero that does not have the Amulet of Yendor.[1]
A dretch is among the tame minor demons that can be given as minions to chaotic heroes via sacrifice or prayer at experience levels 6 and below.
Dretches appear among the random i that are part of the first quest monster class for Knights and make up 24⁄175 of the monsters that are randomly generated on the Knight quest. Dretches also appear among the random i that are part of the second quest monster class for Necromancers and make up 6⁄175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Necromancer quest. They additionally appear among the random i that are generated on each floor of the Wizard quest at level creation.
Strategy
Like their imp brethren, the dretch's combination of regeneration and decent AC can pose a problem for early-game heroes in roles that start with poor damage output, such as Healers or Tourists, and their lower base level lets them appear slightly earlier. Heroes who find themselves unable to deal consistent damage that outpaces a dretch's healing should consider either utilizing wands, or else exploiting their ability to follow the hero by retreating to an already-explored level and then using an Elbereth engraved in the dust to scare them away from the stairs.
