A drider, s, is a type of monster that appears in EvilHack. The drider is a large spider-like monster with centaur-esque anatomy that is the result of drow being converted into humanoid–spider hybrids: they retain the drow's humanoid upper body and can wear armor on it, but below the waist they have the form of an eight-legged spider, and are the only spiders that a drow hero cannot tame with thrown food. Driders are strong, accurate, can see invisible, possess ultravision, will collect items such as weapons and armor that they come across, can darken lit areas, and can go berserk while at 1⁄3 of their HP or lower.
A drider has two weapon attacks, a bite attack that inflicts strength-draining poison, and a spitting attack that spreads webs. Driders possess sleep resistance and poison resistance along with a vulnerability to iron and light.
A drider corpse is poisonous to eat, and eating a drider corpse or tin grants 4⁄25 each (+16%) of additional sleep resistance and poison resistance.
Generation
Randomly-generated driders are always created hostile.
Driders appear among the random s that are part of the first quest monster class for Tourists and make up 24⁄175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Tourist quest. They also appear among the random s that are part of the second quest monster class for Rangers and make up 6⁄175 of the monsters randomly generated on the Ranger quest.
If Lolth is the inhabitant of the second-tier demon lord lair in Gehennom, two of the possible maps will generate a drider next to her during level creation, while the remaining map will generate two driders next to her during level creation.
A drider has a 2⁄3 chance of being generated with a dark elven bow and a stack of dark elven arrows, and will otherwise be given a dark elven hand crossbow and a stack of dark elven crossbow bolts—the projectiles have a 1⁄100 chance of being coated in drow poison. A drider also has a 2⁄3 chance of being generated with either a dark elven spear (effective 1⁄2 chance), a dark elven broadsword (effective 1⁄9 chance) or a dark elven long sword (effective 1⁄18 chance) as their melee weapon, as well as an independent 1⁄3 chance of either a dark elven tunic (effective 5⁄18 chance) or dark elven chain mail (effective 1⁄18 chance) as their armor.
Driders generated during level creation are given a random item to hide under, despite being incapable of hiding.
Origin
The drider (plural "driders" or "drider") is a form of transformed drow that appear in Dungeons & Dragons, and are depicted as drow-spider hybrids—though driders have arguably the best aspects of both drows and beings, but because of their deformity they are outcasts from drow society, and the transformation is generally considered a form of punishment. Whether or not the form is intended as a punishment, or acts a boon for maintaining good standing with the drow goddess Lolth, is inconsistent between editions of Dungeons & Dragons.
