A scroll of ice is a type of scroll that appears in Hack'EM, and is adapted and altered from the scroll SlashTHEM.
Generation
Scrolls of ice make up 1⁄100 (1%) of all scrolls randomly generated on the ground or as death drops. General stores, second-hand bookstores and rare books shops can stock scrolls of ice.
Writing a scroll of ice with a magic marker takes 10 to 19 charges.
Description
The scroll of ice is waterproof, making it immune to blanking as a result of becoming wet.
When read, a scroll of ice will affect the hero's surroundings and possibly the hero themselves depending on the scroll's beatitude:
- A blessed scroll creates 3 squares of ice on adjacent squares around the hero, and deals 3d6 cold damage to monsters within a 5-square radius.
- An uncursed scroll creates 5 squares of ice on adjacent squares around the hero, blasts the hero's hand with cold air for 2d3 cold damage, and deals 2d3 cold damage to monsters within a 3-square radius.
- An cursed scroll creates 7 squares of ice on adjacent squares around the hero, blasts the hero's hand with cold air for 1d3 cold damage, and deals 1d3 cold damage to monsters within a 3-square radius.
- Reading a scroll of any beatitude while underwater freezes the hero's square and inflicts 8d8 physical damage to the hero (naturally subject to half physical damage), and a hero that survives the damage is then ejected and placed on top of the resulting ice square.
Reading the scroll outside of water will auto-identify it. The creation of ice from reading the scroll can freeze pools, puddles and sewage, replaces lava with solid rock, and removes fire traps—most other magical traps will be converted to ice traps. Monsters with cold resistance take no damage from the scroll, while the hero takes no damage from reading a non-blessed scroll if they have cold resistance from either the complete intrinsic or an extrinsic source. Monsters that have fire resistance but not cold resistance take +3d3 damage. Potions in the inventory of monsters hit by the scroll have a 1⁄3 chance per item of freezing and shattering.
Reading a scroll of ice while confused will instead create 1d3 monsters nearby, with ice elementals created if the scroll was cursed and freezing spheres otherwise.
