A blood-spear is a type of projectile that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. Blood-spears are a tiny-sized object that uses the firearms skill and is designed as ammunition for several types of firearms and Undead Hunter weapons. It has a base material of hemargyos and appears as a silver spike when unidentified.

Three other types of bullets exist in dNetHack and its variants:

  • Blood-bullets, which are the unupgraded version of blood-spears,
  • Bullets, which are generally restricted to a handful of race-role combinations and are made of lead,
  • Silver bullets, which are distinct from bullets with an object material of silver.

Generation

Blood-spears are not randomly generated, though they can be found in bones and wished for.
After claiming the "improve blood-bullets" vampiric defilement upgrade, applying a nightmare's bullet mold creates a number of blood-spears based on your current experience:

  • 5 blood-spears from XL 1–12
  • 10 blood-spears from XL 13–21
  • 20 blood-spears from XL 22–30

Description

As firearms ammunition, blood-spears must be fired or "thrown" from an appropriate launcher to deal their actual base damage. Unlike blood-bullets, properly fired blood-spears do not always mulch when thrown, instead following normal rules for mulchable projectiles. They deal slashing, piercing, and blunt damage when properly fired from an Undead Hunter weapon or firearm and cannot be poisoned. Blood-spears are the upgraded variant of blood-bullets, available to characters with the "improve blood-spears" vampiric defilement upgrade. Blood-bullets and blood-spears can also substitute for the 25 energy cost for firing The Holy Moonlight Sword when quivered, following their normal rules for mulching when fired from an appropriate launcher.

Blood-spears are compatible for use with the following firearm weapons:

Strategy

Applying the shining object property to a stack of blood-spears will prevent them from mulching and does not require transmuting its base material.
