A xorn monk, X, is a type of monster that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The xorn monk is a type of xorn that acts as a servant of Master Kaen, and like the basic xorn they are breathless, amphibious and capable of phasing through walls.

Xorn monks have five attacks: the same pair of claw attacks and bite attacks as a regular xorn, and two kick attacks that precede the bite attack.

Xorn monks possess fire resistance, cold resistance and stoning resistance.

Generation

Xorn monks are always generated hostile and meditating. They are not a valid polymorph form nor are they a valid genocide target, the latter of which would have no real effect due to the mechanics of Quest monster generation ignoring genocide in dNetHack and its derivatives.

Xorn monks are only randomly generated on the Monk quest, where they make up 16 of the randomly generated monsters in the branch. Several floors of the Monk quest also generate xorn monks at level creation: three are generated on the locate level, one is generated in each of the lower filler levels, and four are generated on the goal level.

Xorn monks are generated with a pair of boots, a pair of gloves, a sedge hat, and a cloak, all sized to fit the monster and subject to the following generation rules:

  • The cloak has a 150 chance of being a cloak of magic resistance, and will otherwise be a robe; the cloak will have its enchantment increased by 1-4 points after creation.
  • The cloak glyph will be colored orange, as well as the boots and gloves if they are non-metallic.
  • Both gloves and boots will have their enchantment increased by 1-4 points after creation, and may be given the following properties:
    • Each set of gloves and boots has a separate 110 chance of being either bladed or spiked, with an equal probability of each.
    • They each have a 150 chance of being freezing, shocking or flaming, with an equal probability of each. Otherwise, they each have a 120 chance of being frosted, sparking or red-hot, with an equal probability of each.
    • They each have a 150 chance of being anarchic, holy or unholy, with an equal probability of each. Otherwise, they each have a 120 chance of being unruly, consecrated or desecrated, with an equal probability of each.
  • The boots will be one of the following:

Origin

The xorn originates from Dungeons & Dragons, where it debuts in the 1st Edition Monster Manual of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. Xorns come from the Elemental Plane of Earth and are depicted as odd and radially-symmetrical creatures: a large mouth sits at the top of their rocky body, surrounded by three long arms interspersed with their three eyes and three stumpy legs. All of their limbs are evenly spaced, and their arms end in sharp talons.

Like many creatures from their Elemental Plane, xorns can travel through ground and stone as if it were water. Xorns encountered outside their home plane are not especially peaceful, but only attack if something else attacks them first or impedes their scavenging. The usual xorn diet consists of stone and minerals, as well as some types of metals.
