Generation
Wizards may start with a potion of gain energy as one of their random potions.[1]
Potions of gain energy make up 21⁄500 (4.2%) of all randomly-generated potions. General stores and liquor emporiums can sell potions of gain energy.
Description
Quaffing a potion of gain energy exercises wisdom and affects a character's current and maximum energy: a blessed potion will increase maximum energy by 3d6 and restore three times that value to current energy, an uncursed potion will increase maximum energy by 2d6 restore three times that value to current energy, and a cursed potion will decrease maximum energy by 1d6 and subtract three times that value from current energy (to a minimum of 0).
Alchemy
Performing alchemy with a potion of gain energy and a potion of healing, extra healing or full healing via dipping will "upgrade" them to an uncursed and diluted potion of extra healing, full healing, or gain ability, respectively. Dipping a potion of confusion into a potion of gain energy will produce either a potion of enlightenment (1⁄3 chance) or booze (2⁄3 chance).
Strategy
Most spell-casting characters will appreciate having spare potions of gain energy if needed in a pinch, and most characters in general will appreciate them more for their alchemy potential.
History
The potion of gain energy first appears in NetHack 1.3d. From this version to NetHack 3.4.3, including some variants based on those versions, a different formula is used for this potion's energy regeneration:
- A blessed potion will increase current and maximum energy by from 7 to 11.
- An uncursed will have the same results with a range of 2 to 6.
- A cursed potion will decrease your current and maximum power 2 to 6 points.
The current formula for energy restoration from the potion is introduced in NetHack 3.6.0 via commit 37771f77.
Messages
- Magical energies course through your body.
- You drank a noncursed potion of gain energy.
- You feel lackluster.
- You drank a cursed potion of gain energy.
Variants
Variants based on NetHack 3.4.3 and earlier versions use the aforementioned old formula unless otherwise noted.
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, quaffing a non-cursed potion of gain energy increases a character's current energy by 9 + 1d25, plus an additional 5 points if the potion is blessed, and the character's maximum energy is increased by 1d2, plus an additional 2 points if the potion is blessed - if this would put the character's current energy above their maximum energy, half of the difference is added to their maximum energy, and their current energy is set to this new maximum. A cursed potion instead decreases current energy by 9 + 1d25 and maximum energy by 1d2.
This makes the potion capable of restoring more energy compared to NetHack 3.4.3, but it is ideally best quaffed with full energy for the highest increase to maximum energy.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, potions of gain energy follow NetHack 3.4.3 rules, but add or subtract a high additional amount from the quaffer's current energy: +200 for blessed potions, +100 for uncursed potions, and -100 for cursed potions. Monsters that are cancelled will attempt to quaff the potion if they have one or find one in order to reverse the condition.
NetHack Fourk
In NetHack Fourk, sylph characters start each game with a potion of gain energy.
FIQHack
In FIQHack, quaffing a potion of gain energy (or any other source of energy gain) can cure a character's cancellation, and monsters that are cancelled will use the potion to cure their cancellation if possible.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, in addition to SLASH'EM details, brewing a potion of gain energy with a chemistry set uses up three charges.
