Generation
Pirates start with a non-cursed and erosion-proofed +0 cutlass.
Cutlasses are not generated randomly, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Some monsters can be generated with cutlasses:
- Pirate brothers, the quest guardians for the Pirate quest, are always generated with cutlasses.
- Dancing duelists may be given a cutlass among their weapons.
- Mayor Cummerbund, the Pirate quest leader, is always generated with a cursed and erosion-proofed cutlass whose enchantment is picked from the higher between its initial value or a random value from +1 to +3 (with equal probability for each).
- Blackbeard's Ghost, the Pirate quest nemesis, is always generated with a cursed and erosion-proofed cutlass whose enchantment is picked from the higher between its initial value or a random value from +2 to +6 (with equal probability for each).
- Deep ones generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest or Android quest) have a 1⁄6 chance of being given a weapon set that includes a thoroughly eroded cutlass.
- Deminymphs that are generated with standard pirate kits will be created with a cutlass that has an independent 1⁄100 chance of being mercurial in material, and will be given an enchantment ranging from +0 to +3.
- Skeletal pirates have a roughly 1⁄2 chance of being created with an eroded +0 cutlass as their primary weapon.
- Damned pirates are always created with a cursed +0 cutlass.
Description
A cutlass inflicts slashing damage, dealing 1d10 damage against small monsters and 1d8 damage against large ones. A cutlass can be coated in poison by dipping it in an appropriate potion. A hero that wields an elven scimitar while Skilled or better in scimitars gains the "long slash" expert trait.
In terms of monster weapon preference, monsters will favor the cutlass over the elven scimitar, and will prefer a trident or better to the cutlass.
