A can of grease is a type of tool that appears in NetHack. It is made of iron, and is used to grease items for various purposes. The oilskin cloak and oilskin sack act as "permanently greased" objects.

Generation

Each can of grease is generated with d25 charges.[1]

Description

Applying a can of grease can be used to slather any item in a thick layer of grease, and you can also select - to grease your hands - doing either will use up one charge. Greased cans can hold a maximum of 50 charges; uncursed charging adds 1-5 charges, while blessed charging adds 5-10 charges, or 6-15 if there are fewer than 10 charges left.

Greased objects are protected from erosion and water damage; greased containers protect their contents from water damage, and greased spellbooks, potions and scrolls are protected from blanking or dilution. If the greased object is an outermost layer of armor (e.g. usually a cloak or helm), it can also protect against attacks that target body parts covered by that object; if the greased piece of armor is cursed, there is only a 23 chance that it will protect you from grabbing or mind-sucking attacks.[2]

Grease has a 50% chance to wear off after each successful protection.[3][4][5] Greased items may slip when you attempt to throw them, similar to cursed projectiles, and will slide further along the floor than normal when kicked. A greased weapon has no additional protection from a bullwhip's disarm attack;[6] greasing quest artifacts or the Amulet of Yendor will not prevent covetous monsters from stealing them from your inventory.

Applying a cursed can of grease has only a 50% chance of being successful and will give you slippery fingers; the other 50% of the time, the can will slip from your grasp and drop to the ground, using up a charge.[7] Applying a non-cursed can while fumbling also only works 50% of the time, though it does not spill grease on your hands.

A can of grease can be used to untrap squeaky boards.

Strategy

Greasing your cloak and helmet is fairly standard strategy for most players; it protects against grabbing from owlbears and sea monsters among other monsters, and mind flayers cannot attach their tentacles to a greased helmet.

When wishing for an item, "greased" is a property to use for body armor and cloaks; while potions and scrolls typically aren't worth greasing manually, it does no real harm to add a layer of protection by wishing for them greased.
