The fire giant, H, is a giant in NetHack. As with all giants, they can throw boulders (and can start with one). Despite the name, their attacks do not do fire damage (unlike fire ants, for example).
Eating the corpse
Eating the corpse of a Fire giant gives you a 30% chance to gain the fire resistance intrinsic, which can be considered critical for Gehennom. You also get +1 to your strength when you eat a giant corpse.
