Land mines are very unlikely to be used by a majority of characters, as one land mine alone weighs as much as three pick-axes, and they primarily figure in the average game as obstacles. A character that does make use of mine traps at all is better off using multiple due to monsters being more likely to avoid them, and will have trouble obtaining and moving multiple land mines without access to Fort Ludios and a bag of holding, even ignoring the significant risk of setting the mines off themselves.

Players that opt to use land mines with the above in mind may employ them to protect a stash, or else serve as an alert system if they intend to stay a long while on the floor (e.g. while farming) - in such cases, it may be wise to bait each of the target squares with a spare item beforehand in order to lure hostile victims.
Be careful, as you can set off your own land mines if you move on to that square or fail to untrap them. Ensure your land mine isn't cursed, you aren't fumbling, and you aren't riding.

Because monsters can often get past them, placing a single land mine is usually not that effective.  However, you can set several mines to make a mine field, which might be handy for dealing with certain special rooms filled with monsters.  You could also use a mine field to protect the area around a stash. It can also be used as a warning system to alert you to the presence of monsters: "Kaablamm!  You hear an explosion in the distance!"

A land mine (or landmine) is a type of item that appears in NetHack. It appears as a form of trap that can be disarmed, and produces a land mine tool if successful.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

Per commit 90ec36bc, land mines have their weight reduced to 200.

Generation

Land mines are only randomly generated in the form of traps, which are encountered at dungeon level 6 and below.

Several land mines are placed in the treasure room of Fort Ludios.

Description

If you successfully untrap an active land mine trap, it will turn into a land mine item[1] - failing has a chance of setting off the land mine instead. Applying a land mine while either handling a cursed one or fumbling also has a luck-modified chance of detonating it instead; Setting a land mine while riding a steed with less than Basic skill has the same chance of detonation, with an even lower chance if fumbling or applying a cursed landmine.

Stepping on a square with a land mine trap will set it off. A land mine that is set off will explode and create a pit on its current square: a character caught in the explosion sustains d16 damage and wounded legs, abuses dexterity, and may also fall into the resulting pit; monsters can also set off land mines, but only have a 13 chance of doing so.[2] Flying or levitating over a land mine square will reveal the trap if it was not already visible, with a much lower chance of setting, and flying monsters have an even lower chance than normal of setting one off this way[3][4] - the victim will not fall into the resulting pit unless the explosion kills them. Land mines can also be set off by rolling boulders, blasting the boulder into several rocks and scattering them.[5]

Any items on the same square as an active land mine will be blasted around the room, or else destroyed if fragile. A land mine that is triggered adjacent to a body of water like a pool or moat will create a pit that immediately fills with water.

The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that it is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate this information.

Per commit 3086f163, shopkeepers will charge you for applying a land mine owned by the shop.

Strategy

History

The land mine first appears as a trap in NetHack 2.3e, and the corresponding object first appears in NetHack 3.2.0.

Origin

A land mine or landmine is an explosive weapon concealed under or camouflaged on the ground - it is designed to destroy or disable enemy targets, ranging from combatants to vehicles and tanks, as they pass over or near it. Such a device is typically detonated automatically by way of pressure when a target steps on it or drives over it, although other detonation mechanisms are sometimes used. A land mine may cause damage by direct blast effect and/or fragments that are thrown by the blast, or by both. A minefield consists of an area with land mines laid throughout.

Due to a mass majority of land mine casualties and injuries being civilians and children, a global movement to prohibit their use led to the 1997 Ottawa Treaty, which to date is signed by 164 nations.

Variants

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, land mines are also generated in Grund's Stronghold.

SporkHack

In SporkHack, successfully untrapping a land mine trap may generate a two-handed sword instead of a land mine item - this is a dual pun on claymore swords and claymore mines.
