A spellbook of remove curse allows you to learn the spell of remove curse. It is an emergency spell, and is the special spell for Priests.

Effects

At unskilled or basic level, this spell acts similar to an uncursed scroll of remove curse; at skilled or expert, it is similar to a blessed scroll. However, in addition to normal circumstances for spell failure (e.g. metal armor), you also cannot cast the spell under any of the following circumstances:

  • You are confused
  • You are being strangled
  • You have no hands free, either from wielding a cursed weapon and curse shield or a cursed two-handed weapon

Strategy

Remove curse is a very useful utility spell that, among other things, can make use-testing certain items less dangerous, such as trying on non-metallic armor. Like the scroll, you can uncurse any item within your inventory by wielding it and casting the spell; only weapons and weapon-tools can weld themselves to your hands when wielded, so wielding other cursed items is safe.

Random use-testing is still generally unadvisable, however; the power could be spent uncursing more valuable items, and among other things the spell will not work to remove a cursed amulet of strangulation, which prevents spellcasting as of NetHack 3.6.1. You will also want to enhance clerical spells from Basic to Skilled if you intend to save power and uncurse multiple items in your inventory simultaneously, especially if playing a power-intensive role such as a Wizard.

The remove curse spell is often outclassed only by the spell of identify, which you can cast beforehand to check items' BUC status as well as identifying it. Priests in particular have an innate knowledge of an item's beautitude, making them much more likely to avoid putting on cursed items in the first place. By that same token, however, a priest with their special spell excels at sorting through any bones files they encounter, allowing them to more efficiently prioritize and uncurse loot without spending precious holy water. The spell also becomes the more useful of the two during the mid- and late game for countering the curse items monster spell from enemy spellcasters, e.g. liches, some quest nemeses and the Wizard of Yendor, though this also means that you will still have a use for scrolls of remove curse, which are best kept in separate containers to #tip out if you are prevented from casting.
