Amulet versus poison
An amulet versus poison is a type of amulet that appears in NetHack.
Contents
Generation
The amulets versus poison is the second-most common type, and makes up 33⁄200 (16.5%) of all amulets that are randomly generated on the ground, in general shops, or as death drops. Jewelers shops can also stock amulets versus poison.
Description
A hero that puts on an amulet versus poison gain extrinsic poison resistance. Monsters will not use this amulet.
Eating the amulet has a 1⁄5 chance of granting intrinsic poison resistance.[1]
Strategy
Similar to the ring of poison resistance, the amulet versus poison is most worthwhile when discovered early on by a hero that does not start with early poison resistance or gain it through experience levels, and it allows them to more reliably survive poison attacks and safely eat corpses of poisonous monsters such as killer bees to gain the intrinsic. The amulet is somewhat more common to find in comparison to the ring as well.
Once the intrinsic is obtained the amulet can be removed and left behind, though it is worth stashing as a backup in the event that poison resistance is lost, e.g. to intrinsic theft from a gremlin.
Identification
The amulet versus poison is difficult to informally identify without some risk to the hero, especially since all amulets share the same base cost. If the hero is able to find a unicorn horn or other method of restoring lost attributes, then eating a poisonous corpse while wearing the suspected amulet is one of the more reliable options.
The following information pertains to an upcoming version (NetHack 3.7.0). If this version is now released, please verify that the information below is still accurate, then update the page to incorporate it.
Per commit 43d331c4, unicorn horns do not restore lost attributes. Alternatives include restore ability or gain ability potions, the restore ability spell, or prayer.History
The amulet versus poison is introduced alongside most of the amulets in NetHack 3.0.0.
Variants
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, an amulet versus poison is always generated in The Spider Caves during level creation. This also applies to SlashTHEM.
dNetHack
In dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, monsters will put on an amulet versus poison if they lack poison resistance.
