A noble's dress, also known as an armored black dress or droven dress, is a type of body armor that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is large-sized armor that has a default material of shadowsteel, and appears as an armored dress when unidentified.

Generation

Drow Noblewomen start each game with a +2 noble's dress. Other drow heroes that are not Madpeople start the game with knowledge of the noble's dress—drow heroines in roles that start with a gentlewoman's dress are instead given a noble's dress, though there are no roles where this substitution applies.

Noble's dresses are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones. Noble's dresses can be forged by shadowsmiths.

Two noble's dresses are randomly placed on the lower filler levels of the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest during level creation, where they are among the items buried in the secret corridors.

A tenuous +3 noble's dress with the symbol of Lolth engraved on it is generated inside a sack placed near the center of the Drow Healer quest goal level during level creation.

Several monsters are generated with noble's dresses:

  • A'salom is always generated with a +0 noble's dress.
  • Mother, the Drow Noble quest leader and mother of the drow Noblewoman heroine, is always generated with an erosion-proofed +5 noble's dress bearing the symbol of the hero's house.
  • The sisters of the drow Noblewoman heroine that act as the Drow Noble quest guardians are always generated with erosion-proofed +0 noble's dresses bearing the symbol of the hero's house.
  • Drow matrons and drow matron-mothers have a 18 chance of being generated with noble's dresses that have the symbol of Lolth engraved on them.
  • Female myrkalfr are always generated with white plastic reflective noble's dresses that bear the symbol of the Last Bastion.
  • Parasitized gynoids have a 19 chance of generating with an armor set that includes a plastic noble's dress.
  • Carcosan courtiers have a 14 chance of generating with a noble's dress if they are created in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest), and have a 18 chance otherwise.
  • Deminymphs that are randomly generated outside of the Drow Healer quest or the Lost Cities have an effective 1320 chance of being given a Dreamlands noble kit with a noble's dress that has an enchantment ranging from +1 to +3, a random drow house's symbol and a 140 chance of being made into an artifact. The symbol has a 110 chance of belonging to Pen'a, a 310 chance of being Eilistraee's symbol, and will otherwise belong to a random fallen drow house.
  • Vampire ladies generated in the future are always generated with copper noble's dresses that have an enchantment ranging from +3 to +6.

Description

While worn, a noble's dress grants 4 base AC, 4 base DR and MC3, and wearing or removing a noble's dress takes five actions. As medium armor, wearing a noble's dress grants an AC bonus equal to (dexterity - 11)4 (rounded down). A hero wearing a noble's dress gains a flat +1 bonus to charisma, along with applying another charisma bonus equal to the armor's enchantment if the dress is not covered up by a worn cloak.

A hero reading a noble's dress in their inventory will inspect any symbols engraved on the armor: as drow armor this symbol will usually be the crest of a drow family's house, though hallucination will naturally display symbols that are completely random and sometimes non-existent, and certain individual noble's dresses also have a chance of displaying specific hallucinatory wards to a hallucinating hero.

As shadowsteel armor, the noble's dress may gradually erode during each turn that the wearer spends in lit squares, with the chance of erosion being significantly reduced if they have a cloak that grants MC3, and erosion from light will not occur if they have invisibility—erosion-proofed noble's dresses will gradually self-repair any evaporation from light while the wearer is not invisible and remains in an unlit square. If a noble's dress is completely evaporated by light exposure, it will be turned into a plain dress instead of being destroyed (representing the shadowsteel crumbling away from the fabric).
