The Neutral Quest is one of the alignment quest dungeon branches available in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It consists of four distinct regions: the Outlands, the Lethe Waterway, the Gulf of N'Kai, and the city of R'lyeh. Many of the maps used for levels in the Neutral Quest are repurposed from the Lethe patch, its SLASH'EM port and the original patch's revisions of Gehennom.

The three alignment keys of Neutrality can be found in this branch, and entrance to Gehennom requires any three of the nine total alignment keys: Center of All and several argentum golems guard the First Key of Neutrality, while two alhoons guard the Second and Third Keys of Neutrality. The shrouded dispensary is a third branch that can be accessed from the Outlands, and is home to Illurien of the Myriad Glimpses and several spellbooks. Along with the technically-optional alignment keys, there are several other optional-but-useful artifacts and items that can be found across the quest branch and its levels.

Generation

The Neutral Quest has a total of 19 levels divided between the Outlands and the Lost Cities (also known as the Depths):

  • The Outlands consist of seven levels—Gatetown, four Outlands forest levels, the Spire, and the Sum of All.
  • The Lost Cities consist of twelve levels—the seven that make up the Lethe Waterway, the four making up the Gulf of N'Kai, and the city of R'lyeh.

Branch level

The "branch level" that contains the magic portal to the Neutral Quest will always occur in the main dungeon with the layout depicted below:

The up and down stairs are placed randomly on two of the four squares marked 0 within the level's corner rooms. The magic portal is placed on a random square within the area surrounding the moat of the fortress, not counting the western and eastern vertical areas between the corner rooms.

There are eight shriekers placed at the marked locations during level creation, and two land mines are placed in the western entrance to the fortress proper. All of the doors are closed, and the ones that are either within the fortress or lead directly into it are locked as well.

The fortress itself is home to nine sets of barracks ("brck") in the marked locations that contain Yendorian Army troops, as well as a throne room occupied by a master mind flayer, eight deep ones and a deeper one—all of these monsters will be generated asleep. The master mind flayer is placed on the room's throne, with a random wand, three potions and two scrolls placed on their square—the areas that are marked with iron chains will have prisoners placed on those squares, with their normal monster starting inventory given to the master mind flayer. The two stores ("str") noted on the map contain weapons in the west store and wands in the east store.

If the inhabitants of the barracks are awakened, they will happily raid both stores for weaponry before coming after you.

The Outlands

The Outlands levels comprise the first half of the Neutral Quest, and are collectively treated as separate from the Lost Cities for purposes of branch teleportation.

Gate Town

Gate Town is the first level of the Neutral Quest, and is where the hero arrives after taking the magic portal from the main dungeon level above. Spellcasting is more difficult on this level, with spell failure rates increased by 10% per spell level.

The magic portal to the Outlands is always placed in the southwestern-most square, while the magic portal back to the main dungeon is placed randomly in the area surrounding the town's moat. The floor here is undiggable.

Within the town proper, there is a beehive and a temple along with eight shops, all in the marked locations above—the temple is always cross-aligned, and will have an aligned priest or other appropriate monster tending to the altar, e.g. a temple to Ghaunadaur can have a priest of Ghaunadaur or priestess of Ghaunadaur, while temples in the Undead Hunter pantheon will not have priests, and so on. The eight shops consist of four delicatessans ("food"), a used armor dealershop ("armr"), a hardware store ("tool"), a liquor emporium ("pot"), and a general store ("shop").

No other monsters are generated during level creation, outside of the monsters in the beehive and the attendants for the temple and shops. Similarly, no monsters will randomly generate on the level under normal circumstances, though monsters that have wandered into either portal from Gate Town or the Outlands will be found here as normal.

Outlands Rings

This is a series of 4 woodland areas connected by magic portals. These portals can be seen from a distance, so a means of portal detection is not needed. However, this may still be a good time to use a crystal ball, or other means of trap detection too heavy to be considered for the endgame, since it will allow the portal to be located from across the level. The shrouded dispensary is accessible via a downstair from a random level.

Spells are more difficult to cast on these levels. Spell failure rates are increased, by 20% per spell level on the first level, 30% per level on the second, 40% on the third, and by 50% per spell level on the fourth.

Outlands Map Inclusions

Spire

This area contains a small stony maze. Spell casting is impossible on this level.

Sum of All

The last Outlands area, the Sum of All, is a Cavern level with eight Argentum Golems in the center of the level around the stairs down to the Lost Cities, which is hidden behind two heavy statues that behave like boulders—one of Adamach and one of Great Cthulhu—which must be moved in order to access the Lost Cities. Once you have entered Sum of All, Center of All will spawn with greater probability. It is the last level of the outlands.

Spells are easier to cast on this level. Spell failure rates are reduced by (10 - spell level)*10%.

The Lost Cities is composed of nine floors in total, leading to the Gulf of N'Kai and R'lyeh.

1: Entrance to the Lost Cities

There is only one version of the first level of the depths. It has undiggable floors and Lethe water. Note that while it is the first in the sequence of the Lost Cities, its level number is a continuation of the Outlands' last level (Sum of All) for the purposes of level teleporting.

This entire level counts as a maze and has an undiggable floor. It is mostly brightly lit, and all water present on the level is lethe water.

Squares marked by a H will contain a lurking one with an 80% chance. The spots marked 1 have a 50% chance of generating a deep one during level creation. Spots marked with 2 have a 50% change of generating a deeper one during level creation.

7 randomly generated items are scattered around the level, with 3 more being generated with a 75% chance, another with a 50% chance and a last one with a 25% chance.

4 rust traps and 2 randomly generated traps are placed on the level.

Up to 2 kukeri may be generated and randomly placed on this level, each with a 7% chance. A living doll may be randomly generated with a 10% chance.

0: River head

The first priest of an unknown god is generated on this level. There are two different versions of the river head. Both have undiggable floors and contain amnesia-inducing Lethe water. The river head is on a separate branch: it is accessible by a separate upstair, and the level is a dead-end. It shares its level number with the Sum of All level. Both versions of this level will contain a magic marker, a luckstone and an (unusable) cursed magic lamp.

Squares marked by a H will contain a lurking one with an 80% chance. The lurking one hidden behing a secret door may be generated on top of either a cursed -2 leather armor, or a blessed +2 leather armor.

The following odds of a monster being generated during level creation apply to squares marked by:

  • A 2 have a 20% chance of generating a living lectern
  • A 5 have a 50% chance of generating a nightgaunt
  • A 7 have a 75% chance of generating nightgaunt

2 randomly generated B monsters will be placed somewhere on the level, with 2 more possibly being generated with a 50% chance each. A vampire bat and a raven will also be generated somewhere on the level. Most monsters that aren't randomly generated will be asleep, with the exception of the dragon in the southern cave.

Squares marked by a 5 may contain a scroll of blank paper and a spellbook of blank paper, each with a 50% chance of generating. The square marked as 1 will contain a cursed scroll of teleportation and a potion of amnesia.

The chest in the central island will always contain a potion of oil and a cursed magic lamp; note that this lamp cannot summon a djinni to grant wishes and cannot be lit without filling it first, after which it will behave as an oil lamp instead.

One randomly generated magic marker will be placed somewhere on the level, and one luckstone is placed in the room with the sleeping red dragons. One scroll of enchant armor is generated in the southern cavern's dragon hoard.

2 randomly generated B monsters will be placed somewhere on the level, with 2 more possibly being generated with a 50% chance each. A vampire bat and a raven will also be generated somewhere on the level. Most monsters that aren't randomly generated will be asleep.

The vampire lord generated in the fountain room will always be generated with a cursed scroll of create monster and a potion of full healing. The vampire lord generated in the southern cave with the wargs will always be generated with a wand of fire and a wand of slow monster. The vampire with the orcish minions will always be generated with a potion of speed.

Squares marked by a 5 may contain a scroll of blank paper and a spellbook of blank paper, each with a 50% chance of generating. The square marked as 1 will contain a cursed scroll of create monster, a potion of full healing, a cursed scroll of teleportation, a potion of amnesia and a potion of sickness. Spots marked with a 2 will have a randomly generated item placed on them.

The throne room contains two thrones and two chests, where the lurking ones are generated. The ogre kings will be generated with a wand of lightning and a wand of death. The room below the throne room will be a temple area.

4 randomly generated monsters will be generated during level creation, as well as 3 ogres.

The following randomly generated items are scattered throughout the level: 1 scroll, 1 gem, 1 potion, and 3 randomly generated items. 3 more items may generate with a 50% chance each, and another 3 with a 25% chance. The scroll of earth generated on the level will always be blessed.

Squares marked by a H will contain a lurking one with an 80% chance. Squares marked by a 1 and 2 will have a random monster of a specific class generated on them:

This entire level counts as a maze and has an undiggable floor. It is mostly brightly lit, and all water present on the level is lethe water.

The "throne room" is actually a morgue. The 2 lurking ones are each standing over a chest, and there are 2 thrones present in the chamber. The lich will be generated with a wand of lightning, and the master lich will be generated with a wand of death. The room below the morgue will be an abandoned temple area.

2 randomly placed human mummies, 2 randomly placed elf mummies and 6 randomly generated zombies are generated during level creation.

The following randomly generated items are scattered throughout the level: 1 scroll, 1 gem, 1 potion, and 3 randomly generated items. 3 more items may generate with a 50% chance each, and another 3 with a 25% chance. The scroll of earth generated on the level will always be blessed.

Squares marked by a H will contain a lurking one with an 80% chance. Squares marked by a 1 and 2 will have a random monster of a specific class generated on them:

3: The Alhoon's Manse

There are two versions of the third level of the depths: the Hedge Maze and the Lich Marshes. The first alhoon of the Neutral Quest is located on this level. Both have undiggable floors and Lethe water.

The fifth level of the depths is also known as the "Nitocris" or "Black Mother" level. The eastern side of the level is occupied by Nyarlathotep cultists, while the western side is occupied by cultists of the Black Mother. It contains the first of the two mouths of the goat as well as the only blessed found in the Lost Cities and is home to the Hmnyw-Pharaoh and Nitocris.

This entire floor is dark and has undiggable walls and floors. All water present on the level is lethe water. This is the last level of the depths and holds The Silver Key, the last two priests of an unknown god and may also have some potions of space mead scattered around the inner chambers.

Entrance to the level is made on the entrance chamber, 1 in the outer landing. From it, the northern and southern barracks, 2 and 3 as well as the northern and southern platforms may be accessed, 4 and 5, which will each hold a sleeping star spawn that will generate with a wand of lightning. Three more star spawns are generated on R'lyeh, one sleeping star spawn within the chamber leading to the north-eastern temple, and two more which will be randomly placed in seperate temples, and won't be generated asleep.

The temple complex encompasses seven temple areas, all of which hold unaligned altars aligned to Yog-Sothoth and is only accessible through the drawbridge leading to the entrance hall 6, guarded by two master mind flayers. They will be generated with two wands each: a wand of speed monster and a wand of cold (with only 3 charges) on the first, and a wand of slow monster and a wand of fire (with only 3 charges) on the other. The entrance hall is connected to individual chambers holding sleeping mind flayers. Each chamber has two spots where a potion of space mead may generate with a 10% each. The chamber holding the star spawn will contain a hidden door leading to the north-eastern temple, 7, but which can only be accessed by squeezing diagonally and is a dead end. At the end of the hall, a secret door leads to the south-eastern temple, 8, which is also a dead end and which can also only be accessed by squeezing.

Moats filled with krakens guard the following chamber, and two secret doors lead to narrow hallways guarded by three shoggoths each. To the north, a hallway connects to the northern outer temple, 9 and the northern inner temple 10. To the south, a hallway connects to the southern outer temple 11 and the southern inner temple 12. From the outer temples, it is possible to access the central temple, 13. The Silver Key may generate in any of the temple areas (7 through 14). The Great Cthulhu, The Silver Key, the two priests of an unknown god and the two awake star spawns will each be generated on different altars.

14 additional squeaky board traps and 12 random items will be scattered on the level. All monsters are generated asleep. New monsters will generate at only 120 of the normal monster generation rate, and will always be placed in the chamber enclosing the upstairs.
