Flying boots are a set of boots that appear in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. They are a type of magical armor that replace the levitation boots of NetHack. Flying boots have a base material of leather, and have a randomized appearance when unidentified—the default one associated with them is a pair of "snow boots".
The flying boots are the base item for the artifact Hermes's Sandals.
Generation
Flying boots make up 3⁄250 (1.2%) of all armor that is randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock flying boots.
A shadowsmith, a mithril smith with access to a forge, a Dracae Eladrin, and Oona can provide smithing services to create a pair of flying boots (made of each smith's specialty materials, respectively) for a hero that pays a peaceful one of the named monsters or requests the item from a tame one.
Flying boots can occur in several locations:
- A cursed pair of +0 flying boots is generated in the Migo Hives within the Neutral Quest during level creation, where it is placed north of the hidden corridor leading to the third migo hive.
- For half-dragon Madwomen, the +2 spiked boots that are generated among their belongings in the special box on the Madperson quest goal level may be flying boots.
- The historic statue of Perseus on Medusa's Island always contains a pair of +0 flying boots with a random beatitude.
- Hellish seals that contain a Jrt Netjer may generate flying boots among the items within.
- Flying boots with high enchantments and object properties can be generated in the magic item vaults that appear within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if the lair appears as the second Abyss level.
Xorn monks have a 1⁄144 chance of being generated with a pair of flying boots that have the following traits:
- Their glyph will be colored orange if they are non-metallic.
- Their enchantment has a 1⁄4 chance of being increased by 1-4 points, with an equal probability of each value.
- They have 1⁄10 chance of being either bladed or spiked, with a roughly equal probability of each.
- They have a 1⁄50 chance of being freezing, shocking or flaming, with a roughly equal probability of each. Otherwise, they have a 1⁄20 chance of being frosted, sparking or red-hot, with a roughly equal probability of each.
- They have a 1⁄50 chance of being anarchic, holy or unholy, with an equal probability of each. Otherwise, they have a 1⁄20 chance of being unruly, consecrated or desecrated, with a roughly equal probability of each.
Description
While worn, flying boots grant 1 base AC, 1 base DR and extrinsic flying.
A pair of flying boots can be used with an upgrade kit to repair the moth wings of imperial elven body armor, granting the flying property while the armor is worn.
