An upgrade kit is a type of tool that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a medium-sized tool that has a base material of copper.
Generation
Elf Madmen will find two wood upgrade kits in their quest box.
Upgrade kits make up 1⁄25 (4%) of all tools that are randomly generated on the ground, in shops and as death drops. Randomly-created upgrade kits will always be uncursed.
One upgrade kit is guaranteed to be generated in all versions of the mines' end level. Two additional upgrade kits may also generate, each with a 1⁄2 chance.
Every item inside the chests and boxes generated inside Ferrumach Rilmani barracks in the outlands have a 1⁄4 chance of being an iron upgrade kit.
Statues of colossal clockwork war-machines which may generate in the Paths of Law will always contain an upgrade kit.
Statues of aphanactonan assessors which may generate in the Paths of Law will always contain an upgrade kit.
Piles containing 2–16 clockwork components will sometimes be created in the Paths of Law during level creation, and may also contain archaic plate mail with a 1⁄2 chance and a thoroughly corroded upgrade kit, with a 1⁄4 chance.
Various types of wreckage piles which may rarely generate in the Paths of Law include upgrade kits:
- "Six-armed clockwork mech" wrecks, containing copper items and an upgrade kit. Represents 1⁄10 (10%) of generated wrecks.
- Copper "clockwork horror" wrecks, containing copper items and an upgrade kit. Represent 18⁄25 (72%) of generated wrecks.
- Silver "clockwork horror" wrecks, containing silver items and silver upgrade kit. Represents 9⁄125 (7.2%) of generated wrecks.
- Gold "clockwork horror" wrecks, containing gold items and gold upgrade kit. Represents 9⁄1250 (0.72%) of generated wrecks.
- Scrap piles, containing a very rusted iron upgrade kit. Represent 1⁄5 (10%)
Various monsters may leave behind upgrade kits as death drops:
- tinker gnomes have a 1⁄20 chance an upgrade kit. For Cavepeople, this chance is instead increased to 1⁄9.
- clockwork factories have a 1⁄20 chance an upgrade kit. For Cavepeople, this chance is instead increased to 1⁄9.
- aphanactonan audients have a 1⁄20 chance an upgrade kit. For Cavepeople, this chance is instead increased to 1⁄3.
- aphanactonan assessors will always leave behind an upgrade kit upon death.
Description
Applying an upgrade kit allows the hero to do the following:
- Upgrade your clockwork
- Repair imperial armor
- Merge runes into silver knight equipment
- Extract runes from silver knight weapons
- Resize armor
Smith monsters, with the exception of shadowsmiths, cannot duplicate upgrade kits.

- You applied an upgrade kit and are prompted if you want to use it.
