A potion of space mead is a type of magical potion that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It always appears as a "golden potion" when unidentified.

Generation

Potions of space mead are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

In R'lyeh, the lowest floor of the Lost Cities and the Neutral Quest, a dozen potions of space mead each have a 110 chance of being placed in the side chambers outside of the temple complex during level creation.

Description

A hero quaffing a potion of space mead is subjected to the many effects listed below in the given order, dependent on the potion's beatitude, diluted status and their race. This will also auto-identify the potion.

  1. Clockwork heroes that are not Androids do not experience any effects unless they have the spirit Enki bound, which grants them the same benefits as any other hero that has the spirit bound: a clockwork hero with Enki bound raises their current HP by an amount equal to (XL*10), which will also adjust their maximum HP to match if this would raise their current HP above it, and their drunkenness is raised if it is below the current cap.
  2. Other heroes raise their sanity by at least 5 (with a higher increase if they are below 50 sanity) while their drunkenness is raised if it is below the current cap, and they become confused for 3d8 (more) turns if the potion is not blessed. They heal an amount of HP equal to their experience level, and a hero with Enki bound also raises their current HP by an amount equal to (XL*10), which will also adjust their maximum HP to match if this would raise their current HP above it.
  3. If the hero is not a clockwork automaton (including an Android) or an incantifier, they gain 110 nutrition for a cursed potion, 130 for an uncursed one or 150 for a blessed one.
  4. If the above nutrition gain would raise a hero's nutrition past oversatiated levels for their race, they will instead have their nutrition set to that value minus 2d20 and then immediately vomit, abusing wisdom—though this check is only ignored specifically for clockwork heroes, incantifiers also do not gain nutrition from space mead and so is not subject to this effect.
  5. If the hero is not a clockwork automaton (including an Android), wisdom is abused–stacking with the previous instance if the hero made themselves vomit–and they will fall unconscious for up to 15 turns if the potion was cursed, along with becoming nauseous for 20-30 (more) turns.
  6. Finally, the hero gains 5,000 turns of slow digestion and will also gain 5,000 turns of magical breathing if they are not already unbreathing.

Strategy

Amassing a cache of space mead is one of the side benefits of reading a blessed scroll of genocide to eliminate the mind flayers in R'lyeh after entering the level, since their loot can then be picked up without nearly as much immediate danger.
