Enki

Enki, God of the First City is a spirit that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack.

Ritual, seal and taboo

Enki's seal must be drawn in the center of an open space, i.e. one that a 5x5 area of squares centered on the seal can fit in.

To remain bound to Enki, the hero must not refuse seduction attempts: an engagement ring can still be put on to safely ward off seduction so that it is not initiated to begin with (thus preventing any opportunity to refuse).

Mark

A hero that has Enki bound will have water running off their body in steady rivulets, which can be seen from a distance. This can be disguised by wearing a cloak or a suit of armor.

Benefits

While Enki is bound, the hero's inventory is protected from water damage, and their base attack bonus is increased to +0.75 to-hit per experience level—they also gain skill in short swords, slings, darts, and boomerangs. Binding Enki once will permanently grant the hero the ability to swim.

Enki's active powers are as follows:

  • Walker of Thresholds: The hero can teleport to a chosen doorway square.
  • Geyser: The hero can summon a geyser from the abzu against a chosen monster—this geyser deals 8 spirit dice of damage if it succeeds a to-hit roll, and otherwise deals 1-5 dice of damage. Monsters hit by the geyser will have their inventory subjected to water damage, and targets wearing water walking boots are resistant.

Enki's passive powers are as follows:

  • City-Dweller: The hero gains 2 points of speed when there are least 4 monsters nearby, and gains 4 points of speed if least 8 monsters are nearby.
  • Alley-Fighter: The hero gains 1 point of AC for each wall square that they are adjacent to.
  • Fruits of Civilization: A hero eating "prepared food" (i.e. any food other than slime molds or corpses) restores HP equal to the amount of nutrition gained, and quaffing booze restores 10*XL HP. A clockwork automaton with Enki bound becomes capable of quaffing booze, and gains the same effects for it as heroes of other races do.

As a monster

In notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack, Enki, @, also appears as a monster that can be summoned by an Illithanachronounbinder. Enki is a strong human monster that can be seen via infravision, and will pick up items that they come across. Like many human-class monsters and summoned spirits, Enki cannot be made tame.

Enki has a strong weapon attack, a touch attack and a ranged attack that splashes the target with water and damages their inventory, and a passive rust attack.

Generation

Enki is first generated when summoned from her seal by an Illithanachronounbinder. They are always created hostile, and are not a valid polymorph form or genocide target.

Enki is always generated with a cloak and a sickle.

Enki does not leave a corpse upon death.

Strategy

Below this point, there are major spoilers for the Illithanachronounbinder role. They can be accessed by selecting the "Role spoiler" tab.

Enki lacks especially notable weapons or armor, but their water-based attacks can damage your weapons and inventory unless you safeguard against them.

If Enki is killed after being summoned, they can be encountered again in the Void, a branch accessed by opening the high altar of Ilsensine the Fallen as an Illithanachronounbinder using the invoke effect of The Elder Cerebral Fluid. Enki is generated along with many other spirits of the near void on the first floor of the branch, and is generated with the "whispers" template, which makes them nonliving.

Encyclopedia entry

The main temple to Enki is called E-abzu, meaning "abzu temple" (also E-en-gur-a, meaning "house of the subterranean waters"), a ziggurat temple surrounded by Euphratean marshlands near the ancient Persian Gulf coastline at Eridu. He was the keeper of the divine powers called Me, the gifts of civilization. His image is a double-helix snake, or the Caduceus, very similar to the Rod of Asclepius used to symbolize medicine. He is often shown with the horned crown of divinity dressed in the skin of a carp.

Considered the master shaper of the world, god of wisdom and of all magic, Enki was characterized as the lord of the Abzu (Apsu in Akkadian), the freshwater sea or groundwater located within the earth. In the later Babylonian epic Enûma Eliš, Abzu, the "begetter of the gods", is inert and sleepy but finds his peace disturbed by the younger gods, so sets out to destroy them. His grandson Enki, chosen to represent the younger gods, puts a spell on Abzu "casting him into a deep sleep", thereby confining him deep underground. Enki subsequently sets up his home "in the depths of the Abzu." Enki thus takes on all of the functions of the Abzu, including his fertilising powers as lord of the waters and lord of semen.
