An atgeir is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a large melee weapon, making it two-handed for a medium-sized wielder, and uses the spear skill. It has a base material of iron, and appears as a bladed spear when unidentified.
The atgeir is the base item for the artifact weapon Gungnir.
Generation
Atgeirs make up 1⁄200 (0.5%) of all weapons that are randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops. Used armor dealerships and antique weapon outlets can also stock atgeirs.
Fire Brand and Frost Brand can be generated or wished for in atgeir form, and can be reshaped into an atgeir by dipping the artifact into a forge or fountain respectively—this reshaping requires the hero to either have an atgeir in their inventory or be at least Skilled in spears.
The arrow rain monster spell has a base 1⁄33 chance of generating several atgeirs.
Dwarf smiths can forge atgeirs at the hero's request, which can be made out of iron or silver.
An atgeir is generated on each of the four bedrolls within the Norn's chamber on the Valkyrie quest home level during level creation.
Warriors have a 9⁄10 chance of generating with an atgeir, while awakened valkyries and transcendent valkyries have a 1⁄2 chance of generating with an atgeir.
Description
An atgeir inflicts slashing and piercing damage, dealing 2d4 damage against small monsters and 1d12 against large monsters. An atgeir can be poisoned by dipping it in an appropriate potion. A hero that wields an atgeir while they are at Skilled or better in spears gains the "hew", "graze", "stop thrust", and "focus fire" expert traits.
