A cutting laser is a type of charged energy and slashing weapon which can be used to dig out squares that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The cutting laser is a small launcher, making it one-handed for most medium and smaller heroes, has a base material of plastic and is considered to be a futuristic item. It uses the firearms skill and fires laser beams, expending one charge for every shot. Cutting lasers appear as a hard tan lozenge when unidentified.
Generation
Anachrononauts start each game with knowledge of the cutting laser's identified appearance.
Several types of hero can start with a cutting laser.
- Half-dragon Anachrononauts start each game with an uncursed +0 cutting laser.
- Vampire Anachrononauts start each game with an uncursed +0 cutting laser.
- Drow Anachrononauts start each game with an uncursed +0 cutting laser.
Cutting lasers are not randomly generated and cannot be wished for by a hero that isn't a Tourist, though they may still be found in bones.
2 uncursed +0 cutting lasers are generated in the bottom left storage room inside the bastion on the Anachrononaut quest home level. The Android quest home level will only have 1 guaranteed uncursed +0 cutting laser be generated instead, with a 1⁄2 chance of another being generated.
2 cutting lasers are generated in the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest locate levels.
2 cutting lasers are generated in the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest goal levels, which may be embedded in the walls.
2 cutting lasers are generated on Anachrononaut quest and Android quest "filler B" levels.
Elven monsters generated in the future during level creation will always be generated with a cutting laser.
Description
Cutting lasers inflict energy and slashing damage, bypassing most damage type resistances. The laser beams have a total range of 3 squares, and firing a cutting laser will only shoot one beam independently of skill, gaining a +3 to-hit bonus and expending one charge per shot. A fired laser beam deals 3d2+10 against small monsters and large monsters. Similarly to a zapped wand of digging, fired laser beams can also cut through walls, squares of stone, doors, iron bars, and trees, but will only dig out one square at a time. The cutting laser has an extra square of range when digging, with beams reaching places up to 4 squares away. Cutting lasers do not benefit from expert traits.
A cutting laser is normally generated with 80 to 99 charges unless otherwise specified, and can be recharged any number of times. Recharging a cutting laser has different effects based on the beautitude of the charging source: blessed charging sets charges to 100, cursed charging sets charges to 10 and uncursed charging sets the charges to a number between 80 and 99.
Monsters will not use cutting lasers as weapons, preferring to use proper weaponry.
