A droven greatsword is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is a huge-sized weapon, making it two-handed for a medium-sized hero, and uses the two-handed sword skill. It has a default material of obsidian, and appears as a "two-handed sword" with its material displayed when unidentified.

The droven greatsword is the base item for the artifact Anguirel, and The Sceptre of Lolth is an artifact that can take the form of a droven greatsword.

Generation

Hedrow Priests start the game with a blessed +1 droven greatsword. Drow Kensei start the game with a blessed and erosion-proofed +1 droven greatsword. Other drow heroes that are not Madpeople start with knowledge of the droven greatsword's appearance—drow Madpeople that open their quest box will regain their knowledge of the droven lance. A hero starting with a droven greatsword will always have it drug-coated.

Droven greatswords are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones. Fire Brand and Frost Brand can be generated or wished for in droven greatsword form if the hero is a drow hero, and drow heroes can reshape either artifact into a droven greatsword y dipping the artifact of the matching element into a forge or fountain respectively—this reshaping requires the hero to either have a droven greatsword in their inventory or be at least Skilled in two-handed swords.

Two droven greatswords are each placed randomly in the inner and outer ring areas on the lower filler levels of the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest during level creation.

Drow Madpeople that start the game as male will find a silver acid-secreting droven greatsword among the belongings placed in their special quest box on the Madman quest.

Droven greatswords can be generated in the magic item vaults within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if the lair appears as the second Abyss level.

Some drow and other monsters can be generated with droven greatswords:

  • Hedrow blademasters normally generate with a +4 droven greatsword that has a 34 chance of being drug-coated, and will otherwise be envenomed.
    • Hedrow blademasters that are generated as priests of a temple to Ghaunadaur will generate with an uncursed and erosion-proofed +5 droven greatsword that has a 34 chance of being acid-coated, and will otherwise be envenomed.
    • Hedrow blademasters that are generated as priests of a temple to Vhaeraun will generate with an uncursed and erosion-proofed +5 droven greatsword that has a 34 chance of being drug-coated, and will otherwise be envenomed.
  • Y-cultist fighters and other drow that do not have a defined starting inventory have an effective 112 chance of generating with a droven greatsword.
  • Y-cultist patrons always generate with a +4 droven greatsword that has a 14 chance of being filth-encrusted, a 12 chance of being drug-coated, and a 14 chance of being envenomed.
  • Dokkalfar eternal matriarchs generated in the Anachrononaut quest are created with an unholy, wrathful and faded +9 shadowsteel droven greatsword.
  • Deminymphs that are given "mad drow priestess" kits will have a roughly 12 chance of generating with a droven greatsword that has an enchantment ranging from +2 to +4, a 1100 chance of being mercurial, and a separate 120 chance of being made into an artifact.

Description

A droven greatsword inflicts slashing damage, dealing 1d18 damage to small monsters and 1d30 damage to large monsters, and has a +2 to-hit bonus. A hero that wields a droven greatsword at Skilled or better in two-handed swords gains the "graze", "fell" and "cleave" expert traits.

In terms of monster weapon preference, monsters will favor the droven greatsword over a set of crow talons, and will prefer a beast crusher or better to the droven greatsword.
