The xan or other mythical/fantastic insect, also known simply as the mythical insect or fantastic insect, is a monster class that appears in NetHack, and is represented by the lowercase x glyph, x. Xans and mythical or fantastic insects are designated internally by the macro S_XAN.[1]

History

The xan first appears in Hack 1.0, while the grid bug first appears in NetHack 3.0.6.

Variants

SLASH'EM

SLASH'EM adds the three electric bugs to the monster class:

All three monsters are essentially stronger grid bugs, possessing a shocking bite attack that can destroy rings and wands in the target's inventory. Additionally, the grid bug and all electric bugs can hit as enchanted weapons.

UnNetHack

UnNetHack adds one monster to the monster class:

dNetHack

In dNetHack, notdNetHack, and notnotdNetHack, two monsters are added to the monster class:

SpliceHack

SpliceHack adds the three electric bugs to the monster class:

The electric bugs behave mostly as they do in SLASH'EM, although they are also constrained to orthogonal (or cardinal) movement as the gridbug is.

notdNetHack

notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack retain the monsters added in dNetHack and adds one other monster:

SlashTHEM

SlashTHEM retains the monsters added in SLASH'EM and introduces several additional monsters to the monster class:
