A fauchard is a type of weapon that appears in NetHack. It is a two-handed polearm that is made of iron, and appears as a pole sickle when unidentified.

Generation

In addition to random generation, general shops and antique weapons outlets can sell fauchards.

Watchmen and soldiers may be generated with a fauchard.[1]

Strategy

The fauchard has roughly the same average damage against small and large monsters as the partisan, but is fairly lighter at 60 aum and slightly more common as well.

History

The fauchard is introduced with all other polearms in NetHack 1.3d.

Origin

Fauchards.png

A fauchard is a type of scythe-like polearm weapon used in Europe from the 11th through the 17th centuries, and consisted of a blade with a moderate to strong curve and an outer cutting edge for slashing and thrusting. As a name, "fauchard" is from early French and may have been used to describe various types of weapons: the sovnya may have been a localized term for the same medieval weapon, and later historical texts use "glaive" (possibly Welsh) and "fauchard" to describe the same weapons; elements from other pole-arms (such as prongs to parry weapons and hook armor) were adapted to the fauchard, complicating naming further. Some sources differentiate the fauchard from other polearms by the curvature of the blade and the direction and point of the cutting edge.

Variants

dNetHack

In dNetHack and notdNetHack, Webweaver's Crook is a lawful artifact fauchard that favors drow, and acts as the alternate quest artifact for traitor male drow Priests, Rangers, Rogues, and Wizards. It grants +1 to-hit and double damage, and can be used in melee range without any penalty. Attacks with Webweaver's Crook snare the target in webs and are automatically given sleep, blinding and paralysis poison, without any penalty to alignment record.

NetHack Fourk

NetHack Fourk removes the fauchard and many other polearms.

xNetHack

xNetHack removes the fauchard and many other polearms.

EvilHack

In EvilHack, a fauchard can be created at a forge by combining a saber and a spear.
