A gas grenade is a type of weapon that appears in SLASH'EM, SpliceHack and SlashTHEM. The gas grenade is a stackable projectile that uses the firearms skill and is designed to be fired from grenade launchers, though they can also be armed and thrown manually. It is one of two grenade types alongside the frag grenade, and is made of iron.

Generation

Gas grenades are generated differently depending on the variant.

SLASH'EM

In SLASH'EM, gas grenades are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

Several Yendorian Army monsters can be generated with frag grenades if the FIREARMS compile-time option is defined:

  • Sergeants have a 12 chance of generating with a stack of 3–7 gas grenades.[1]
  • Lieutenants have a 12 chance of generating with two stacks of gas grenades.[2]
  • Captains have a 12 chance of generating with a stack of 3–7 gas grenades as ammo for their grenade launcher, which they have a 14 chance of generating with.[3]

SpliceHack

In SpliceHack, gas grenades are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

All mercenaries have an effective 112 chance of generating with a gas grenade, and captains have a separate 12 chance of generating with a gas grenade.

One-Eyed Sam, the arms dealer in charge of the black market, is always generated with a stack of 3–5 gas grenades.

SlashTHEM

In SlashTHEM, gas grenades are very rare and make up 11000 of weapons randomly generated on the ground, in general shops or as death drops.

Weapons outlets, used armor dealerships and gun stores can also stock gas grenades. Gun stores have a 120 chance of generating a stack of gas grenades on each square.

Description

A gas grenade can be applied to arm it, and thrown grenades will automatically become armed[4][5][6][7][8]—a cursed gas grenade has a 12 of not arming properly in either case.[9][10] In SLASH'EM, applying a stack of gas grenades will arm the entire stack. Monsters will not apply a gas grenade to arm it, but will arm it in the process of throwing it at the hero.

A hero arming a gas grenade or stack of gas grenades owned by a shop will be charged for that item or stack, and shopkeepers will not pay for armed grenades that would fall into their ownership.[11][12][13] An armed grenade on the ground can still be picked up and thrown or kicked.

A gas grenade that is armed cannot be disarmed and will detonate a few turns afterward, with the exact timing dependent on the grenade's beatitude:[14][15] blessed gas grenades always detonate in four turns, uncursed grenades detonate in 3-4 turns, and cursed grenades detonate in 1-6 turns—this turn count includes the turn spent arming the frag grenade, and beatitude is directly correlated to a more consistent fuse timer. A gas grenade "thrown" or fired from a grenade launcher will travel up to six squares, and will always explode on impact even if it was not armed.[16]

Gas grenades do not have damage dice specified, and deal the default 1d2 damage if they hit a hero or monster. A gas grenade's explosion is fiery and deals 3d6 poison damage to any hero or monster caught in its radius unless they have poison resistance, with the fiery explosion burning their inventory (including burning flammable armor and destroying other flammable items) and also creating noise that awakens sleeping monsters.[17][18][19][20][21] The explosion will ignite other gas grenades, frag grenades, potions of oil, land mines, and sticks of dynamite in the radius and cause them all to explode at the same time, increasing the overall range of the explosion if they were on or close enough to the exploding grenade's square—this also destroys scrolls, spellbooks and any flammable ammunition, i.e. bullets, silver bullets and shotgun shells, that are caught in the explosion.

A gas grenade that explodes in the open inventory of a hero or monster will deal 2d5 damage to them, and a hero being killed by this damage has the cause of death livelogged as "carrying live explosives".[22][23] A gas grenade that explodes while submerged in a moat or pool of water will produce a message depending on where the hero is located in relation to it.[24] A gas grenade that is buried in the ground or inside a container will detonate with no other effect.[25]

Strategy

In SLASH'EM, gas grenades are generally of limited offensive utility: though they deal decent explosive damage, they are individually heavier in weight than potions and their range is limited to being the same as most other thrown items; grenade launchers are uncommon and have little effect beyond slightly extending the reach of fired grenades. A bag of holding can mitigate carrying capacity concerns, but will generally require the hero to pull the grenades out ahead of expected combat situations. Gas grenades can be somewhat useful against monsters that lack poison resistance, and are more effective in rooms of non-resistant monsters.

On the defensive side, a hero will usually have a source of poison resistance to deal with the threat of Yendor military fighters carrying gas grenades, and a source of speed will usually give the hero more time to fling them back—their explosions can still destroy ammunition the hero wants to use for their own firearms, however. Players should be quick to dispose of grenade carriers and throw away or stash any armed grenades that get near ammunition that they want to preserve; heroes not interested in using grenades themselves can sell them to applicable shops for decent value. (Do not throw the grenades into the shop!!)

Gas grenades in SpliceHack are much lighter at 10 aum (compared to 25 aum in SLASH'EM and SlashTHEM), and are both somewhat more common and somewhat more useful as weapons.

The weight of gas grenades in SlashTHEM is counteracted somewhat by the variant's increased average and maximum carrying capacity, though much of the advice for SLASH'EM still applies.

Origin

A grenade is a small explosive weapon that is typically thrown by hand (referred to as a "hand grenade"), and can also refer to a shell or other explosive projectile shot from the muzzle of a rifle or a grenade launcher. Grenades are often spherical, cylindrical, ovoid or truncated ovoid in shape, and are sized to fit the hand of an average-sized adult. Grenades work by dispersing fragments (fragmentation grenades), shockwaves (high-explosive and stun grenades), chemical aerosols (smoke, gas and chemical grenades), fire (incendiary grenades) or a jet of molten metal (anti-tank grenades). Their outer casings are generally made of a hard synthetic material or steel, and are designed to rupture and fragment on detonation, sending out numerous fragments (shards and splinters) as fast-flying projectiles.

A modern hand grenade generally consists of an explosive charge ("filler"), a detonator mechanism, an internal striker to trigger the detonator, and an arming safety secured by a transport safety: the user removes the transport safety before throwing, and once the grenade leaves their hand the arming safety is released, allowing the striker to trigger a primer that ignites a fuze, or 'delay element'; the fuze then burns down to the detonator and explodes the main charge. Some grenades are mounted at the end of a handle, known as "stick grenades": the stick design provides leverage for throwing longer distances, but at the cost of additional weight and length, and a friction igniter inside the handle or on the top of the grenade head is used to initiate the fuze. Stick grenades have been considered obsolete by western countries since the Second World War and Cold War periods.

Gas grenades are specifically designed to burn or release a harmful gas rather than being a deadly explosive. The implementation of the gas grenade item in SLASH'EM and other variants conflates the frag grenade with the "high explosive" grenade: high explosive grenades are classified as offensive weapons and have a much smaller casualty radius compared to their maximum thrown distance, though the spread of fragments and fuze can extend far past that radius; their explosive power also relies more on concussive effects, making them best suited for throwing into confined spaces such as fortifications or buildings.

Based on the message given by a gas grenade exploding while underwater, the item may also be conflated with the concussion grenade: concussion grenades are often used as depth charges (underwater explosives) around boats and underwater targets, with some designed for use against enemy divers and frogmen, and kill or otherwise incapacitate the target by creating a lethal shock wave underwater.
