A bullet is a type of weapon that appears in SLASH'EM, SlashTHEM, SpliceHack, and Hack'EM. The bullet is a projectile that uses the firearms skill and is designed as ammunition for pistols, submachine guns, heavy machine guns, standard rifles, assault rifles, and sniper rifles. It is made of iron.
In Hack'EM, bullets can also be used with flintlocks, and appear as pellets when unidentified, similar to the item in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack.
The silver bullet is a sub-type of bullet that deals silver damage and can be used in the same firearms as standard bullets.

Generation
Bullets are generated differently across variants.
SLASH'EM
In SLASH'EM, bullets are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Rogues have a 3⁄10 chance of starting the game with a pistol and 25–34 bullets in place of their daggers and darts.[1] Lycanthrope Undead Slayers have a 1⁄4 chance of starting the game with a pistol as their secondary weapon, and their pistol ammo will be 30–39 standard bullets in place of the role's standard silver bullets.[2][3]
Weapons outlets can stock bullets, and have a total 9⁄100 chance of generating a stack of bullets on each square.[4]
A sniper rifle and stacks of uncursed +3 bullets and uncursed +4 bullets are placed on the square of the top hostile soldier near the inner walls of the stronghold at level creation, with each having a 2⁄5 chance of being generated.
Yendorian army fighters are frequently generated with bullets for their firearms:
- Soldiers have a roughly equal probability of being generated with a rifle or submachine gun, and are always given 2 different stacks of 3–27 bullets as ammo.[5]
- Lieutenants have a roughly equal probability of generating with a heavy machine gun or submachine gun, and will be given 3 different stacks of 3–52 bullets for a heavy machine gun or 2 different stacks of 3–32 bullets for a submachine gun.[6]
- Sergeants have a 1⁄2 chance of being generated with an assault rifle and 2 different stacks of 3–32 bullets as ammo.[7]
- Captains that are not generated with an auto shotgun have a roughly equal probability of generating with a heavy machine gun or assault rifle, and will be given 3 different stacks of 3–62 bullets for a heavy machine gun or 2 different stacks of 3–62 bullets for an assault rifle.[8][9]
SpliceHack
In SpliceHack, bullets are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
SlashTHEM
In SlashTHEM, bullets are very rare and make up 1⁄1000 of weapons randomly generated on the ground, in shops or as death drops, and are created in stacks of up to 20.
In addition to generation details for roles in SLASH'EM, the following roles also start with bullets for their firearms:
- Officers start each game with 30-39 uncursed +0 bullets for their pistol.
- Pirates start each game with 25-34 uncursed +0 bullets for their pistol.
Weapons outlets, used armor dealerships and gun stores can also stock bullets. Weapons outlets have a total 9⁄100 chance of generating a stack of bullets on each square, while gun stores have a 3⁄20 chance of generating a stack of bullets on each square.
In addition to generation details for monsters and level creation in SLASH'EM, the following monsters can also generate with bullets for their firearms:
- Stormtroopers have a roughly equal probability of generating with a heavy machine gun or submachine gun, and will be given a stack of 3–52 bullets for a heavy machine gun or a stack of 3–32 bullets for a submachine gun.
- Player monster pirates and officers are always generated with a pistol and 2 different stacks of 3–52 bullets as ammo.
- Draco the Sharpshooter is always generated with 2 different stacks of 3–52 bullets as ammo for his sniper rifle.
Hack'EM
In Hack'EM, bullets are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.
Pirates start each game with 8-11 bullets for their pistol. Rogues have a 3⁄10 chance of starting the game with a pistol and 25–34 bullets in place of their daggers and darts. Undead Slayers have a 1⁄4 chance of starting the game with a pistol and 30–39 bullets with an object material of silver as their secondary weapon.
Gun stores can stock bullets, and have a 1⁄4 chance of generating a stack of bullets on each square.
An iron safe in Grund's Stronghold may contain up to 40 uncursed +1 bullets, with each bullet having a 2⁄5 chance of being generated. As in SLASH'EM, a sniper rifle and stacks of uncursed +3 bullets and uncursed +4 bullets are placed on the square of the top hostile soldier near the inner walls of Grund's Stronghold at level creation, with each having a 2⁄5 chance of being generated.
Shopkeepers that are not generated with shotguns have a roughly equal probability of generating with a pistol or rifle, and will be given 2 different stacks of 3–22 bullets as ammo.
Similar to SLASH'EM, Yendorian army fighters and other monsters are frequently generated with bullets for their firearms:
- Sergeants that are generated with an assault rifle will be given 2 different stacks of 3–32 bullets as ammo.
- Soldiers have a roughly equal probability of being generated with a rifle or submachine gun, and are always given 2 different stacks of 3–27 bullets as ammo.
- Lieutenants that are not generated with an auto shotgun have a roughly equal probability of generating with a heavy machine gun or assault rifle, and will be given 3 different stacks of 3–62 bullets for a heavy machine gun or 2 different stacks of 3–62 bullets for an assault rifle.
- Stormtroopers have a roughly equal probability of generating with a heavy machine gun or submachine gun, and will be given a stack of 3–52 bullets for a heavy machine gun or a stack of 3–32 bullets for a submachine gun.
- Pirate crewmates are always generated with a stack of 3–12 bullets for their flintlocks.
- Keystone Kops that are not given cream pies have a 1⁄3 chance of generating with a stack of 3–17 bullets as ammo for their pistol.
- Grund the Orc King always generates with a stack of 3–41 bullets for his submachine gun.
10-15 bullets can be created at a forge by combining an iron chain and 2 of either darts, daggers or knives.
Description
As firearms ammunition, bullets must be fired or "thrown" from an appropriate launcher to deal their actual base damage, and properly-fired bullets will always mulch whether or not they hit their target. Bullets on the floor or in a monster's open inventory (but not in the hero's open inventory) will be destroyed if subjected to fire damage, e.g. from exploding rockets and grenades.
In Hack'EM, 2 bullets can be combined with an iron chain at a forge to create shotgun shells.

Strategy
Bullets fired from a gun do a very high amount of base damage, and are only outperformed in this regard by shotgun shells and rockets: firearms such as assault rifles and submachine guns can also easily fire upwards of five bullets per action for very impressive damage rates. As they always mulch when shot, however, using bullets effectively requires careful planning and collection.

Origin
A bullet is a kinetic projectile and a component of firearm ammunition that is shot from a gun barrel. They are made of a variety of materials, such as copper, lead, steel, polymer, rubber and even wax, and are made in various shapes and constructions (depending on the intended applications), including specialized functions such as hunting, target shooting, training, and combat. The term bullet is derived from Early French, originating as the diminutive of the word boulle or boullet ("small ball", not to be confused with sling bullets).
Bullets are often tapered, making them more aerodynamic. Bullet size is expressed by weight and diameter (referred to as "caliber") in both imperial and metric measurement systems. Bullets do not normally contain explosives, but strike or damage the intended target by transferring kinetic energy upon impact and penetration. In the context of modern firearms, bullets are most often packaged with propellant as a cartridge ("round" of ammunition) consisting of the bullet/projectile itself, the case which holds everything together, the propellant that provides the majority of the energy to launch the projectile, and the primer which ignites the propellant; cartridges in turn may be held in a magazine, a clip, or even a belt for rapid-fire automatic firearms.
The terms "bullet", "cartridge" and "round" are used interchangeably to refer colloquially to this entire projectile—singular bullets do exist but are much less common, and are primarily used with muzzle-loading and cap and ball firearms among a few other types. Each type of real life firearm in general has its own specialized caliber of cartridge: of course, NetHack is not real life, and bullets in variants of NetHack are made interchangeable in terms of compatibility and damage between entirely distinct firearm types, ranging from pistols to heavy machine guns. One presumable reason for this is possibly in order to prevent ammo management from becoming all the more tedious.
