A gentlewoman's dress is a type of body armor that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is large-sized armor that has a base material of bone, and appears as an expensive dress made of "silk" when unidentified.

Generation

Noblewomen that are not drow or elves start each game with a +1 gentlewoman's dress—elven Noblewomen receive an elven toga of the same enchantment instead, while drow Noblewomen are given a +2 noble's dress. Vampiric Binder women start with a +0 gentlewoman's dress that is cracked, while vampiric women that are Undead Hunters start each game with a +1 gentlewoman's dress in place of the role's standard jacket.

Gentlewoman's dresses are not randomly generated normally, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

Spa shops in Elshava can stock gentlewoman's dresses.

Gentlewoman's dresses can be generated within dilapidated armories at varying levels of erosion.

A blessed and fixed gentlewoman's dress is generated in the Mordor Fortress area of the Mordor Ruins Quest, where it is placed in the chest of the throne room guarded by the Mordor marshal during level creation.

Gentlewoman's dresses can be found in some roles' Quest levels:

  • Two blessed +2 gentlewoman's dresses are generated on the Convict quest locate level, where they are placed in the chest within the warden's office during level creation. Another blessed +2 gentlewoman's dress is placed near the upstairs on the goal level during level creation.
  • An uncursed +2 gentlewoman's dress is generated on the true home level of the Madperson quest, where it is placed inside the cursed chest within the southeastern-most corner during level creation.
  • A large white-colored +5 gentlewoman's dress is generated on the locate level of the female Half-Dragon Noble quest, where it is among the belongings placed beneath the crow-winged half-dragon's corpse during level creation.

Several monsters can be generated with a gentlewoman's dress:

  • Glasya is generated with a cursed +1 gentlewoman's dress.
  • Justice Archons generated outside of the Drow Healer quest are always generated with a gentlewoman's dress.
  • Parasitized gynoids have a 18 chance of generating with a gentlewoman's dress.
  • The commander on the Anachrononaut quest is generated with a +3 silver gentlewoman's dress that has the holy, axiomatic and reflective object properties—the parasitized commander on the Android quest is also generated with a +3 silver gentlewoman's dress that is holy, axiomatic and reflective.
  • Carcosan courtiers generated in the future (i.e. the Anachrononaut and Android quests) have an effective 18 chance of being generated with a gentlewoman's dress. Carcosan courtiers generated elsewhere have an effective 14 chance of being generated with a gentlewoman's dress.
  • Deminymphs have a couple of possible kits that include a gentlewoman's dress.
    • Deminymphs that are created outside of the Drow Healer quest and given a noblewoman kit will be generated with a gentlewoman's dress that has an enchantment ranging from +2 to +4.
    • Deminymphs that are created outside of the Drow Healer quest and given a samurai kit will be generated with a blessed gentlewoman's dress that has an enchantment ranging from +2 to +4.
    • Deminymphs that are given a "Yellow Sign" mad noblewoman kit will be generated with a yellow-colored gentlewoman's dress that has an enchantment ranging from +2 to +4.
  • Vampire women generated in the future are always created with a gentlewoman's dress that has an enchantment ranging from +1 to +7.
  • Vampire ladies generated outside of the future are always created with a white gentlewoman's dress.

  • Erinyes that are generated in Gehennom or slated for good equipment have an effective 15 chance of generating with a gentlewoman's dress.
  • Female fallen angels that are generated in Gehennom or slated for good equipment have a 16 chance of being generated with a gentlewoman's dress made of cloth.
  • Queen bees generated on the Law Quest have a 310 chance of being generated with a gentlewoman's dress.
  • Female enormous rats have a 1100 chance of being generated with a gentlewoman's dress.
  • Nimune is always generated with a gentlewoman's dress.
  • Some player monsters can be generated with gentlewomen's dresses:
    • Madwomen generated on the Astral Plane are generated with a gentlewoman's dress.
    • Noblewomen generated outside of the Astral Plane are generated with a gentlewoman's dress.
    • Each gentlewoman's dress has a 13 chance of being erosion-proofed, and otherwise there is a 12 chance (effectively 13 total) of them being greased. They have a 13 chance of being cursed followed by a 13 chance of being blessed, and will otherwise be uncursed. The enchantment of the gentlewoman's dress has a 35 chance of ranging from +0 to +4, a 310 chance of ranging +4 to +7, and will otherwise range from -1 to -3.

For human, vampiric, incantifier and gnomish Madpeople that start the game as female, a +2 gentlewoman's dress can be found among their belongings within the special box on the Madperson quest's true home level.

Description

Wearing a gentlewoman's dress grants 1 base AC, 2 base DR to the upper torso, MC3, and a bonus to charisma equal to 2 plus the armor's enchantment. Wearing or removing a gentlewoman's dress takes six actions. As "heavy" armor, wearing a gentlewoman's dress grants no dexterity bonus to AC.

Gentlewoman's dresses are notable for being one of a few types of body armor that can fit centauroid and snake-leg body shapes by default.

Origin

A corset is a type of support garment worn to constrict the torso into a desired shape and posture. They are traditionally constructed out of fabric with boning made of "whalebone" (an older name for baleen) or steel, a stiff panel in the front called a busk which holds the torso rigidly upright, and some form of lacing which allows the garment to be tightened. This may be the reason that a gentlewoman's dress in dNetHack and its derivatives is made of bone, although baleen itself is made of keratin rather than bone—it may also serve as a pun on the aforementioned "bone", which is a rigid part of the corset that forms its frame and gives it rigidity.

Corsets were an essential undergarment in European women's fashion from the 17th century to the early 20th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries they had a conical, straight-sided shape, which eventually evolved into the more curvaceous 19th century form; by the beginning of the 20th century, shifting gender roles that allowed women to be more active outside the home and the onsets of World War I and II (and the associated material shortages) led the corset to be largely discarded by mainstream fashion. Since the corset fell out of use, the fashion industry has extended the term "corset" to refer to garments which mimic the look of traditional corsets.

Modern corset designs may feature some amount of lacing or boning, but generally have very little (if any) effect on the shape of the wearer's body. Elasticated garments, such as girdles and waist trainers, are still worn today and serve a similar purpose in shaping the waist or hips, although they lack the rigidity of corsets. A corset brace is a type of orthotic resembling a traditional corset, used to support the lower back in patients with mild to moderate back pain. Modern corset boning comes in two different qualities: thin-and-flexible flat spring steel, less-stable but more-bendable spiral steel, and synthetic "whalebone" made of plastic that is somewhat less durable, but is also lightweight and molds better to the body. This synthetic "whalebone" is used widely in historical reconstruction due to its similarities to traditional whalebone.
