Lantern plate mail is a type of body armor that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. It is huge-sized armor with a built-in light source that has a base material of iron, and appears as glass-set plate mail when unidentified.
Generation
Lantern plate mail is not randomly generated, though it can be wished for or found in bones. Normally-generated lantern plate mail will be unlit unless otherwise specified, and the light has a base duration of 1000–1499 turns.
A set of lantern plate mail is generated on the Drow Healer quest goal level during level creation, where it is randomly placed outside the walls of the central area.
Some monsters can be generated with lantern plate mail:
- Sir Aljanor is generated with blessed and lit lantern plate mail whose enchantment will be a minimum of +3.
- Alliance vanguards are generated with blessed and lit lantern plate mail.
- Blibdoolpoolp's mindgraven champion is generated with iron lantern plate mail.
Description
While worn, lantern plate mail grants 5 base AC, 7 base DR and MC3, and wearing or removing lantern plate mail takes five actions. Lantern plate mail is heavy armor and grants no dexterity bonus to AC.
As implied by its name, lantern plate mail has an electric lantern built into it that can be applied to turn the lantern on or off: like with normal lanterns, applying cursed lantern plate mail will fail to turn the lantern on 1⁄2 of the time, and turning on lantern plate mail that belongs to a shop will incur a usage fee. Monsters will apply the lantern of any lantern plate mail they are wearing if they do not have another applicable light source and the armor is not cursed.
The light from a lantern plate mail covers a 3-square radius around it, and is put out automatically put out if the mail is placed into a container, the mail is eaten by a metallivore, the mail is hit by water while being worn (e.g. from a rust trap), or a hero or monster wearing the mail is subjected to engulfing.
Lantern plate mail can be recharged indefinitely: reading a scroll of charging targeting lantern plate mail will strip it of power if the scroll is cursed, add 750 turns of light up to a maximum of 1500 if the scroll is uncursed, or set the lantern's duration to 1500 turns if the scroll is blessed. A maid that comes across lantern plate mail with less than 750 turns of light left will recharge it by changing the batteries, adding 750 more turns of light.
