Javelin (skill)
The javelin is a weapon skill that appears in older versions of NetHack from NetHack 3.3.1 to NetHack 3.4.3.[1][2] In those versions, the javelin is the only weapon to use the skill, and the following roles of hero can reach the listed skill levels in javelins:
| Javelin | |
|---|---|
| Max | Role |
| Basic | |
| Skilled | |
| Expert | |
The basis for javelins constituting a separate weapon is that they are designed for throwing, rather than being used to perform thrusting attacks in melee as with spears and similar weapons.[2] NetHack 3.6.0 merges the javelin skill back into the spear skill via commit 54bbb38e in order to make usage of the javelin less cumbersome. Skill caps are also adjusted to keep the higher of the two weapon skills, including the following additional changes:
- Monks, who have a skill cap of Basic for javelins and spears in NetHack 3.4.3, have their skill cap in escape spells raised to Skilled.
- Rangers, who have a higher skill cap for javelins than spears in NetHack 3.4.3, have their skill cap for spears raised to Expert.
- Samurai, who have a skill cap of Basic for javelins and spears in NetHack 3.4.3, have their skill cap for spears raised to Skilled.
Variants
Some NetHack variants created prior to the release of NetHack 3.6.0 may retain the javelin as a separate weapon skill, while others merge the javelin skill into the spear skill class themselves.
SLASH'EM
SLASH'EM retains the separate javelin and spear skills as in NetHack 3.4.3 and previous contemporary versions. This also applies to SlashTHEM.
GruntHack
GruntHack retains the separate javelin and spear skills as in NetHack 3.4.3 and previous contemporary versions.
dNetHack
dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack are variants based on NetHack 3.4.3 that merge the javelin skill into the spear skill.
