A droven spear is a type of weapon that appears in dNetHack, notdNetHack and notnotdNetHack. The droven spear is a huge-sized stackable weapon that can either be thrown or wielded in melee (where it is two-handed for a medium-sized hero), and uses the spear skill. It has a base material of obsidian, and appears as a long spear with its material displayed when unidentified.

The droven spear is the base item for The Death-Spear of Keptolo, and The Sceptre of Lolth is an artifact that can take the form of a droven spear.

Generation

Drow heroes start with knowledge of the droven dagger—drow Madpeople that open their quest box will regain their knowledge of the droven dagger.

Droven spears are not randomly generated, though they can be wished for or found in bones.

Droven spears have a base ¹⁄₃₃ chance of being generated by the arrow rain monster spell.

Droven spears can be found in multiple (usually drow-related) Quest branches:

• A droven spear is generated on the lower filler levels of the Anachrononaut quest and Android quest during level creation, where it is placed randomly among the buried items in the secret corridors.
• Three droven spears are each randomly placed on the locate level of the Drow Noble quest during level creation, and another is randomly placed on each of the lower filler levels during level creation.
• Three droven spears appear on the Hedrow Noble quest during level creation—one is randomly placed on the home level, a second is randomly placed on the locate level and another is randomly placed on each of the lower filler levels.
• A droven spear is randomly placed on each of the upper filler levels of the Hedrow Shared quest during level creation.

Droven spears can be generated in the magic item vaults within the Avatar of Lolth's lair during level creation if the lair appears as the second Abyss level.

Houseless drow have a ¹⁄₆ chance of being generated with a droven spear. Y-cultist fighters and any drow monster that does not have a defined starting inventory will have an effective ¹⁄₁₂ chance of generating with a weapon kit that includes a droven spear.

Description

A droven spear inflicts piercing damage, dealing 1d12 damage versus all monsters, and has a base +2 to-hit bonus. Thrown droven spears are given a +2 to-hit bonus. A hero that wields a droven spear at Skilled or better in daggers gains the "puncture", "stop thrust" and "focus fire" expert traits.

In terms of monster weapon preference, monsters will favor the droven spear over a unicorn horn and will prefer a two-handed sword or better to the droven spear.
